You have:

  • A university degree in business studies, business administration, marketing, economics, international relations, political science, communications, international development, or another relevant technical field is required.
  • A minimum of two (02) years of professional experience in Business for Results (B4R) is required.
  • Fluency in English is required.
  • Knowledge of local language of the duty station Sinhala and/or Tamil is required.
  • Strong communications skills, verbal and written, are required.
  • Strong networking and negotiation skills is required.
  • Ability to work in a multicultural environment and establish harmonious working relationships, both within and outside the organization is required.
  • Advanced knowledge of private sector partnership development is required.
  • Current knowledge of development issues, strategies, as well as programming policies and procedures in international development cooperation would be an asset.
  • Strong familiarity with political and governmental processes would be an asset.
  • Ability to conduct sound policy analysis would be an asset.
  • Ability to contribute to the formulation of strategies and policies would be an asset.

Contract

How can you make a difference?

The position’s purpose is to support the Senior Management, the Chief of Communication, Advocacy, Partnerships and the Programme Officer (Emergency and Resilience) to identify, develop, manage, track, and measure engagements and partnerships with the business sector, which will contribute to achieving country office programmatic outcomes for children. The officer will provide technical guidance to programme colleagues to effectively embed business as a key stakeholder in UNICEF country programme, in par with government, civil society, and academia in line with the Localization agenda.

Positions at the NO-2 level are considered supportive roles to higher-level professionals that are centered on providing research, analysis, and recommendations. Therefore, while these positions contribute substantively to organization-wide strategies, they should also be considered opportunities for incumbents to acquire professional expertise, organizational knowledge, and exposure for further career advancement.

Summary of key functions/accountabilities:

1. Contribute to the implementation of the work plan for the assigned area, to ensure timely and cost-effective delivery of results, in accordance with UNICEF’s business and community resilience and Business for results (B4R) strategies.

2. Contribute to building and maintaining UNICEF’s partnerships with the private sector, by supporting the consolidation and coordination of the Business Council established by UNICEF Sri Lanka to address gaps in realizing children’s rights, promote sustainably, and manage the positive and negative impacts of business on children’s rights. Support the Business Council to formulate work plans and strategies and coordinate their implementation.

3. Identify opportunities and engage the private sector on risk reduction and preparedness, emergency response and recovery, and long-term resilience building (within the business operation, for local communities, including women and children).

4. Help UNICEF programme sections to identify opportunities and raise awareness among businesses to strengthen the resilience of their employees and their employees’ families; and to address the adverse impacts of their operations (if any) on local communities.

5. Identify businesses and promote the use of their core business expertise to achieve UNICEF´s programmatic goals, including humanitarian action, in different areas such as logistics, ICT, media, and banking.

6. Engage business in the provision of supplies to respond to emergencies and during the preparedness phase, in different sectors such as health, nutrition, education, WASH, child protection, or others.

7. Conduct research on prospective new partners for UNICEF, and provide analysis of the areas of work, outreach, finances, and reputation and keep resource partner profiles updated.

8. Assist the Chief of Communication, Advocacy and Partnerships to design and sustain business advocacy: where children’s rights and business interests align, convene champion businesses, place child rights on the agenda of influential businesses and business networks, and mobilize their voice, reach and strategic assets to raise public awareness, change behaviours and support advocacy for child rights.

9. Maintain awareness of current political and social events, and of UN and other multilateral bodies/governments, and conduct analysis to understand how they may impact UNICEF activities and programmes with the private sector and provide timely information to UNICEF staff for decision-making.

10. Contributes to the implementation of global policies and procedures related to engagement with the private sector, including inter-alia, industry-specific guidance.

11. Keep abreast of and share best practices and knowledge learned on private sector engagement.

Education –

A university degree is required in one of the following fields: Bachelors’ Degree in business studies, business administration, marketing, economics, international relations, political science, communications, international development, or another relevant technical field.

Experience -

A minimum of two (02) years of professional experience in Business for Results (B4R) is required.

Additional knowledge or experience in climate change, disaster risk reduction, emergency response and private sector engagement is considered an asset.

Language requirements –

Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of local language of the duty station Sinhala and/or Tamil is required.

Skills –

  • Strong communications skills, verbal and written, are required.
  • Strong networking and negotiation skills is required
