Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the UN Video Section, News and Content Branch, News and Media Division, under the Department of Global Communications. The UN Video Section produces human-centred, global stories on important UN issues affecting humanity, development, peace and security, human rights, gender, climate, and the environment. Videos highlighting the work of the United Nations around strategic communications priorities, events and campaigns are created for digital and broadcast use, including using the art of story-telling to cover untold story angles from places that are often inaccessible to most reporters. UN Video programmes give a voice to the voiceless reaching millions of households worldwide. The incumbent reports to the Chief of the Video Section.

This is a temporary position that is available as soon as possible for a period of six (6) months with the possibility of extension.

Responsibilities Within delegated authority, the Associate TV/Video Producer will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Conceptualizes and creates multimedia video products related to UN news and feature stories on a daily and weekly basis, within editorial guidelines, for optimal promotion and distribution on web-based digital and social media platforms.
  • Pitches story ideas and develops treatments, incorporating range of video storytelling approaches appropriate for news and social media purposes.
  • Researches content from verifiable sources, writes scripts, films, edits and repurposes video products for broadcasting and web-based digital platforms.
  • Liaises with relevant NMD sections and colleagues (eg. UNifeed, UN Webcast), as well as counterparts in the UN system and outside multimedia producers, for the purpose of producing video and other multimedia products in official languages.
  • Coordinates technical arrangements and organizes filming inside and outside UNHQ, as required.
  • Builds up easy-to-access list/archive of multimedia material. Uses available audio-visual metadata guidelines to ensure materials meet the necessary criteria for archival purposes.
  • Assists and works with Public Information Assistant (G-5) assigned to video production. Works on NMD priority video projects, if required.
  • Obtains clearances and copyrights, and when necessary, arranges for payment for use of commercial archive materials.
  • Reviews and shares development of new trends in video production, including news and short videos.
  • Assists colleagues in developing multimedia products.
  • Takes on additional assignments as required.

Education Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent degree) in communications, journalism, media studies or related field with emphasis in broadcasting, filmmaking or its equivalent is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

A first-level degree and no experience will be accepted for candidates who have passed the United Nations Young Professionals Programme Examination (YPP), the United Nations National Recruitment Examination (NCRE) or the General Service to Professional Examination (G to P).

Work Experience A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in public information, video production including shooting and editing, broadcasting, filmmaking, journalism, international relations, public administration is required.

Experience in a newsroom and writing about international affairs in a journalistic news style, is desirable.

Experience in re-purposing/re-versioning TV content for broadcast and digital platforms is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of other UN official languages is desirable.

Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
