1. Organizational Context

a. Organizational Setting

The post is located in the PCT Translation Division of the Patents and Technology Sector. The PCT Translation Division is responsible for delivering high-quality publication-ready translation in relation to patent applications filed under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT). In particular, the PCT Translation Division is responsible for the translation of scientific, technical and legal documents, mainly the abstracts of international patent applications and scientific, technical and legal reports relating to the patentability of inventions. The Asian Languages Section I is also responsible for providing translation into Korean of all WIPO products including online services, website, publications and economic reports.

b. Purpose Statement

As part of Asian Languages Section I, the incumbent is responsible for the localization of WIPO online products and the translation of high-profile publications and articles from English into Korean.

c. Reporting Lines

The incumbent works under the supervision of the Head of the Asian Languages Section I.

2. Duties and Responsibilities

The incumbent will perform the following principal duties:

a. Translate texts in a diverse range of subjects and styles from English into Korean, within the deadlines set and according to the performance standards of the Section;

b. Contribute to the localization of high-profile WIPO products (ePCT, WIPO Pay, eMadrid) for the Korean market, interacting with fellow localizers and developers to ensure accuracy of the translation and a superior user experience; ensure the correct implementation of translation tools for translation consistency and continuity;

c. Translate complex legal texts relating to the patent system in close collaboration with colleagues in the PCT Legal Division and the National Office;

d. Participate in the compilation of the terminology database of the PCT Translation Division;

e. Provide support in the review of the translations provided by external suppliers;

f. Perform other related duties as required.

3. Requirements

Education (Essential)

First-level university degree in modern languages, linguistics, in a scientific or technical field, or in a related field.

Education (Desirable)

Advanced university degree in translation.

Experience (Essential)

At least three years of relevant professional experience, and demonstrated ability to perform translation and localization from English to Korean.

Language (Essential)

Mother tongue level of Korean and excellent knowledge of English (first working language).

Language (Desirable)

Knowledge of other PCT publication languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian or Spanish).

Good knowledge of translation technology and software tools that aid the translation process.

Ability to grasp scientific and technical issues in a wide variety of fields.

Ability to work accurately and to respect strict deadlines.

Annual salary****:

Total annual salary consists of a net annual salary (net of taxes and before medical insurance and pension fund deductions) in US dollars and a post adjustment. Please note that this estimate is for information only. The post adjustment multiplier (cost of living allowance) is variable and subject to change (increase or decrease) without notice. The figures quoted below are based on the September 2023 rate of 84.8%.
