The overall goal is to minimize any negative impact on the environment by UNESCO’s operations and programme activities worldwide, and contribute positively to protecting the environment and communities in which the Organization operates. Under the overall authority of the Executive Office of the Sector for Administration and Management, and the direct supervision of the Environmental Sustainability Officer, the incumbent will support both the coordination of UNESCO’s EMS and the development and implementation of environmental and social standards and safeguards in UNESCO’s programmes. In particular, the incumbent will: Long Description ---------------- - Contribute to the overall implementation of the organization-wide Environmental Management System and of the 2020-2030 Strategy for Sustainability Management in the UN System and help reduce UNESCO’s environmental footprint worldwide. - Support the coordination of the annual Environmental Inventory in the framework of the UN-wide ‘Greening the Blue’ initiative, provide guidance and technical support to Field Offices and contribute to the overall improvement of measuring and reporting of greenhouse gas emissions, water and waste data across the Organization. - Contribute to the development of standard environmental and social risk assessments for UNESCO projects and programmes, and support Programme Sectors and Field Offices in carrying these out. - Undertake awareness raising and communication initiatives to “green” UNESCO, by drafting articles for the intranet, newsletter and website, organizing staff action campaigns and challenges. - Assist with and contribute to other initiatives related to UNESCO’s internal sustainability initiative, such as greening events and IT. **COMPETENCIES (Core / Managerial)** ------------------------------------ Communication (C) Innovation (C) Knowledge sharing and continuous improvement (C) Planning and organizing (C) Results focus (C) Teamwork (C) **-** ----- For detailed information, please consult the [UNESCO Competency Framework](https://en.unesco.org/sites/default/files/competency_framework_e.pdf). Long Description ---------------- **REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS** --------------------------- ***Education*** - Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in sustainable development, environmental management, natural or social sciences, international relations or related field. - A first level university degree in the aforementioned fields of study and additional 2 years of qualifying experience will be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. ***Work Experience*** - Minimum two (2) years of relevant professional experience in environmental management, corporate social responsibility, or related area. - Experience in environmental data monitoring, analysis and reporting. - Expertise in at least one of the areas of the UN Sustainability Management Strategy (EMS, travel, energy/water/waste, air pollution, biodiversity, procurement, green IT). Long Description ---------------- ***Skills and competencies*** - Proven ability to gather, monitor and analyse environmental data. - Good organizational, coordination and communication skills. - Ability to draft and edit clearly and concisely for a diverse range of audiences. - Knowledge and understanding of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in the context of UNESCO’s work. - Advanced IT skills, including in MS office suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint). ***Languages*** - Very good knowledge of either English or French, and good knowledge of the other. **DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS** ---------------------------- ***Work Experience*** - Familiarity with the UN Greening the Blue Inventory/Reporting. - Work experience in or with an organization of the UN system. - Experience in risk management and carrying out environmental impact assessments. **SELECTION AND RECRUITMENT PROCESS** ------------------------------------- Please note that all candidates must complete an on-line application and provide complete and accurate information.
