Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the Sales and Marketing Section, Outreach Division, Department of Global Communications. The Associate Marketing Officer will report to the Sales Officer, Sales and Marketing Section. The Sales and Marketing section (United Nations Publications) works to promoted United Nations' knowledge, communication, and outreach objectives by publishing, selling, distributing, and licensing print and electronic publications, periodicals and databases that disseminate United Nations' knowledge, studies and data. It publishes titles aimed at a broad public, as well as provides electronic products and services for individual customers and institutions. The Section designs and implements the overall marketing strategy for United Nations Publications; promotes the United Nations brand; drives demand for UN publications; fosters strategic relationships with co-publishers, book and e-book sellers, and providers of technology services to the publishing industry; participates in industry conferences and exhibits at major book fairs worldwide.

This position is temporarily available as soon as possible until 31 May 2023.

Responsibilities Participate in the development of comprehensive marketing strategies for the United Nations Publications including books, reports, periodicals, databases, and other institutional products. Assists in execution of the marketing campaigns worldwide including advertising and social media marketing. Provides reporting and analysis for the sales and marketing team. Provides sales management support for subscription products and eCommerce operation. Assist in supervising marketing staff as assigned by supervisor and in supervisor's absence.

Activities include the following marketing functions:

1. Produces effective marketing materials through the application of sales writing and editing skills 2. Prepares, schedules and produces digital medial promotions 3. Schedules and organizes UN Publications participation in the professional exhibits and trade shows. Attends events as required to promote United Nations publications. 4. Prepares, schedules and produces promotional campaigns. 5. Provides guidance in design and production of the promotional materials including semiannual catalogue. 6. Uses marketing expertise and experience to train staff and enhance their marketing skills. 7. Monitors marketing programme expenditures and provides performance reports on effectiveness of marketing activities on a monthly basis. Provides sales reporting and analysis for entire range of UNP products. 8. Assists with the preparation of digital distribution strategies for forthcoming electronic products including: conducting market research, developing marketing and sales collaterals, organizing product launch campaigns. 9. Acts as Product Manager of the eCommerce interface. Provides sales management support for digital subscription products, including managing set up of new customers, administering trial subscriptions, liaising with subscription agents, providing general customer service, and processing renewals. 10. Performs other duties as assigned by the Sales Officer.

Communication: Speaks and writes clearly and effectively; listens to others, correctly interprets messages from others and responds appropriately; asks questions to clarify, and exhibits interest in having two-way communication; tailors' language, tone, style and format to match audience; demonstrates openness in sharing information and keeping people informed

Education An advanced university degree (Master’s degree, or equivalent) in publishing, marketing, library science, business or related area is required. A first-level degree (Bachelor’s degree or equivalent) in the specified fields of studies with two additional years of relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in marketing, communications or related area is required.

Experience in direct marketing and communications is required.

Experience in book publishing is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
