Description of task

Under the direct supervision of Chief Technical Advisor/Program Manager or his or her designated, mandated representative(s) of the Access to Justice, Security and Human Rights Strengthening Program, the UN Volunteer Associate Judicial Affairs Officer will undertake the following tasks:

  • Support national and state level stakeholders in improving and establishing sustainable mechanisms for access to justice including statutory, traditional conflict resolution mechanisms, human rights and transitional justice mechanisms;
  • Contribute to monitoring and collecting updates on activities on access to justice, SGBV, human rights and transitional justice including changes in legislations and national or regional strategies or action plans;
  • Assist state institutions to develop and implement policies, long term strategies, systems and action plans for the establishment of effective legal and justice services and monitoring of human rights trends
  • Support the development and practice of alternative and internationally acceptable methods of increasing access to justice especially for vulnerable groups, for resolving communal disputes and seeking remedies through transitional justice mechanisms;
  • Assist in efforts to monitor and report on justice, human rights and transitional justice issues locally and identify emerging trends using program mapping and other available data;
  • Assist in the identification of and support initiatives for providing legal assistance such as legal aid centres and community-based mobilisers to advise victims, detainees and families of abducted groups and survivors of gender-based violence
  • Contribute to monitoring and reporting on key interventions on rule of law particularly for vulnerable groups such as IDPs, children, the elderly and survivors of SGBV;
  • Support the implementation of Program workplans and other works undertaken in the state;
  • Contribute to monthly and quarterly analytical reports and provide inputs into other reporting requirements.

Qualifications/Requirements

Required degree level:

Bachelor degree or equivalent

Required experience:

12 Months

Experience remark:

  • Demonstrated interest and/or experience (up to 2 years) in access to justice and security, human rights monitoring, governance and peace building
  • Previous experience as a volunteer and/or experience of another culture, (i.e. studies, volunteer work, internship) would be highly regarded.

Language skills:

  • English(Mandatory), Level - Fluent
  • Arabic(Optional), Level - Working Knowledge

Learning Expectations

Learning and development are a central part of the UN Youth Volunteer’s assignment and take place before, during and after his or her assignment in the field. Ideally, offering diverse opportunities for learning and development aim to strengthen the volunteer’s skills and competences, improve the quality of the assignment and keep the volunteer’s motivation high.

Learning elements for the UN Youth Volunteer include the development of:

  • Professional skills: including specific competencies and reflection on assignment-related abilities; and on-the-job skills such as time management, problem solving, team building; and career preparedness such as interview skills, CV preparation, job searching.
  • Inter-personal skills: including communication and listening skills; multi-cultural awareness and cultural competency; and conflict and stress management.
  • Volunteering-related skills: including leadership; civic responsibility; and engagement and active participation.

Beyond the learning opportunities provided by UNV, the host agency will support knowledge and capacity development in the technical areas that are relevant to the UN Youth Volunteer’s assignment. The host agency will provide, at its expense, UN Youth Volunteers with equal opportunity to participate in training courses and workshops offered to its personnel.

UN Youth Volunteers should be between 18 and 29 throughout the entire duration of their assignment. This assignment is funded by the Government of Finland, therefore only Finnish nationals are eligible to apply.
