Nigeria (fondly called ‘Naija’ by its people), is Africa’s most populated country and has a rich cultural and ethnic diversity. It is situated between the Republic of Benin to the West, Cameroon and Chad to the East, Niger to the North and the Gulf of Guinea to the South. Nigeria is politically divided into six geo-political zones, North West, North East, North Central, South West, South East, and South South. Administratively the country is divided into 36 states and a Federal Capital territory (Abuja).

Physically located in the centre of the country and viewed as neutral both ethnically and religiously, Abuja seem to be where culture and religion meet. Nigeria is nearly equally divided between Christianity and Islam, though the exact ratio is uncertain. The vehicle license plate for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) reads “Centre of Unity” a constant reminder that Abuja was selected in the hope of creating a united central city.

Abuja has the advantage over many capital cities of being a well-planned municipality. Visitors and arriving residents will be greeted by wide, well-designed and maintained roads and clean streets. The city is built on a pre-Cambrian basement (granite) rock complex of distinctive domes and hills, the most striking of which is called Aso Rock. Abuja is administered in several districts some of which are, Central Area, where the Garki, Wuse and Maitama where most of UN staff members reside and United Nations Offices are located. The climate of Nigeria is tropical, however there are wide climatic variations in different regions of the country. Near the coast temperatures rarely exceed 32 degrees Celsius (90 degrees Fahrenheit), but humidity is very high and nights are very hot. Inland there are two different seasons. A wet season from April to October, with lower monthly temperatures and the wettest month being June. Also, a dry season from November to March, with midday temperatures that rise above 38° Celsius (100° Fahrenheit) but relatively cool nights, dropping as low as 12° Celsius (54° Fahrenheit).
