1. Organizational Context

a. Organizational Setting

The post is located in the WIPO Japan Office (WJO) in Tokyo. This Office is responsible for effective delivery of WIPO's products and services to Intellectual Property (IP). The WJO is part of a network of External Offices (EOs) that add clear value, efficiency and effectiveness to the delivery of strategic goals of the Organization in a coordinated and complementary way with WIPO Headquarters (HQ). The WJO's core missions are 1) Promotion of IP and innovation, 2) Promotion of WIPO's services, 3) Bridge between WIPO and Japanese government, industry, university and court, and 4) Dissemination of Japan's IP experiences.

b. Purpose Statement

The incumbent is responsible for many of WJO's projects under the Funds-In-Trust Japan Industrial Property Global (FIT/Japan IP Global), such as drafting IP Advantage cases, creating videos to showcase successful stories of utilizing IP, management of short-term fellowship program, conducting research projects on various IP topics, SME-support initiatives and so on.

c. Reporting Lines

The incumbent works under the supervision of the Counsellor of the WJO.

2. Duties and Responsibilities

The incumbent will perform the following principal duties:

a. In connection with the IP Advantage database, research, draft, update, and edit case studies on the successful use of IP, and make necessary arrangements in coordination with WIPO HQ;

b. Create audio-visual materials for public dissemination and visualization of case studies, and make necessary arrangements in coordination with WIPO HQ;

c. Organize meetings such as symposiums including for knowledge-sharing by liaising with speakers and WIPO HQ as necessary;

d. Organize short-term fellowship program by liaising with international fellows and accepting institutions;

e. Implement other projects under the Japan Funds-in-Trust as well as activities for the promotion of IP systems and WIPO's services;

f. Liaise with contractors as necessary to implement projects mentioned in (a)-(e);

g. Perform other related duties as required.

3. Requirements

Education (Essential)

First-level university degree.

Experience (Essential)

At least one year of relevant professional work experience.

Experience (Desirable)

Experience in editing educational materials.

Professional experience in covering short articles for journals.

Language (Essential)

Excellent knowledge of written and spoken Japanese and English.

Job Related Competencies (Essential)

Project coordination and implementation skills.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and ability to maintain effective partnerships and working relations in a multi-cultural environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity.

Competent user of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and the Internet.

Mobility: WIPO staff members are international civil servants subject to the authority of the Director General and may be assigned to any activities, office or duty station of the Organization. Accordingly, the selected candidate may be required to move from time to time to new functions and/or to another duty station.

Annual salary****:

Total annual salary consists of a net annual salary (net of taxes and before medical insurance and pension fund deductions) in US dollars and a post adjustment. Please note that this estimate is for information only. The post adjustment multiplier (cost of living allowance) is variable and subject to change (increase or decrease) without notice. The figures quoted below are based on the September 2023 rate of 49.3%
