Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the UN News Services Section I, which is part of the News & Content Branch of the News & Media Division of the Department of Global Communications (DGC).

The News Section produces daily news and feature stories, magazine programmes, special series and creates audio content using live and recorded audio from meetings and events, and multimedia pieces for the UN News digital platform, incorporating audio and video elements, as well as social media content. Through these products UN News provides daily and weekly content in nine (9) languages (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Spanish, Russian, Hindi, Kiswahili and Portuguese).

The incumbent reports to the Chief of the Unit.

Responsibilities Within delegated authority, the Associate Public Information Officer will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Ensuring timely and accurate coverage of key United Nations developments at Headquarters and around the world by tracking and analyzing information on assigned topics/issues; gathers information from diverse sources and helps to assess news value and other potential impact, as well as to evaluate the effectiveness of information campaigns.
  • Drafting news stories, under the direction of senior editorial staff and providing assistance in developing and generating news and multimedia feature materials, as well as producing content for audio and video programmes.
  • Organizing the clearance of digital assess (including photos and multimedia content) and assisting with social media outlets for the UN News sites.
  • Monitoring a wide range of UN developments and news sources, including official press releases, statements, news conferences, briefings and meetings of various bodies; conducting interviews, transcribing recordings and creating short multimedia pieces, for use as related content.
  • Assisting with maintaining and updating content of the entire UN News website, including focus pages, interviews, photo stories and news quizzes, as well as related social media sites for the Hindi UN News.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent degree) in communication, journalism, international relations, public relations, business analytics or related field. A first level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience A minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in public information, journalism, international relations, public relations is required.

Experience in writing news to daily deadlines and multimedia journalism in Hindi language of the news team, including knowledge of digital content creation and publishing is required.

Experience with on-air presentations and audio editing is required.

Experience managing social media platforms and analytics is desirable.

Experience with search engine optimization is desirable.

Experience with creating and subtitling video clips is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in both English and Hindi is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
