Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Violence against Children (OSRSG-VAC).

The United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) on Violence against Children is a global independent advocate to promote the prevention and elimination of all forms of violence against children.

The SRSG is a global independent advocate in favour of the prevention and elimination of all forms of violence against children acting as a bridge builder and a catalyst of actions in all regions, and across sectors and settings where violence against children may occur. The SRSG mobilizes action and political support to maintain momentum around this agenda and generate renewed concern at the harmful effects of violence on children; to promote behavioural and social change and to achieve effective progress.

The Associate Public Information Officer will report to the Communications Officer and work under close supervision.

Responsibilities Within delegated authority, the Associate Public Information Officer will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Tracks, researches and analyzes information on assigned topics/issues; gathers information from diverse sources and helps to assess news value and other potential impact, as well as to evaluate the effectiveness of information campaigns.

  • Drafts/compiles a specific type or types (e.g. print, broadcast, etc.), of information communications products for target audiences, to include press releases, media packets and reports, brochures, briefings, video clips, newsletters, websites, etc.

  • Organizes the clearance, production and distribution of information material; conducts photo and graphic research.

  • Prepares, on the basis of official UN documentation and other sources, initials drafts of articles or chapters for inclusion in UN newsletters, periodicals, reports and books and supports the rollout, development and maintenance of the OSRSG-VAC website, Sharepoint site and iSeek page and regular content updates.

  • In consultation with others identifies and proposes information opportunities, activities and approaches, such as the OSRSG VAC online digital communication strategy, with a focus on social media management, graphic design, video and photo editing, campaign implementation and website maintenance and development taking into account the situation/topic and target audience.

  • Identifies key contacts/constituencies and opportunities for strategic partnerships to facilitate communication efforts and maintains working relationships with the same.

  • Organizes or participates in the organization of conferences, seminar, press briefings, interviews, etc.; prepares briefing materials for senior officials prior to their participation in such events.

  • Responds to a variety of inquires and information requests internally and externally; prepares related correspondence.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Information Officers and other specialists throughout the organization Officials of other UN agencies, missions Counterparts and other representatives in others international organizations, government, NGOs, media business, academia, etc.

Results Expected: Contributes to institutional public communication efforts of the OSRSG-VAC in different UN official languages, to promote multilingualism, in particular in the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of the OSRSG-VAC online digital communication strategy, with a focus on social media management, graphic design, video and photo editing, campaign implementation and website maintenance and development the production of high-quality digital content through good research, analysis of assigned topics and timely preparation and distribution information products to target audiences.

Effectively organizes media events, conferences, etc. Consistently applies appropriate.

    Education An advanced university degree (Master’s or Doctorate degree, or equivalent) in communication, journalism, international relations, public administration or related fields is required. A first-level or advanced degree (Bachelor’s, Master’s or Doctorate degree, or equivalent) in any fields of studies with two additional years of relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree in the specified fields of studies.

A first-level university degree and no experience will be accepted for candidates who have passed the United Nations Young Professionals Programme Examination (YPP), the United Nations National Competitive Recruitment Examination (NCRE) or the General Service to Professional Examination (G to P).

Work Experience A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in public information, journalism, international relations, public administration or related area is required. No experience is required for candidates who have passed the United Nations Young Professionals Programme Examination (YPP), the United Nations Competitive Recruitment Examination (NCRE) or the G to P Examination (G to P). Experience in social media account management is required. Experience with graphic design and video production is desirable. Experience in production of digital communication products and in implementation of digital campaigns in an international organization is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required; knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.

Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by a competency-based interview.
