This is a UNV International Youth contract. This kind of contract is known as International UN Volunteer. It is normally internationally recruited only. More about UNV International Youth contracts.

The Information Management and Data Analytics team (IMDA) is one of four units that compose the Office’s Emergency Response Section, which is located in OHCHR’s Field Operations and Technical Cooperation Division in Geneva. The team continues the progressive implementation of the Information Management Strategy for Field Operations. This is being achieved through the gradual deployment of IM expertise into the field, the development of data tools to support human rights analysis and strengthening of the services to support the capture and use of structured data and the use of satellite imagery across field operations and investigations.

This UNV assignment is offered in the context of a pilot programme bringing qualified candidates from the developing economies to volunteer with OHCHR. Candidates from developing economies in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, Middle East and North Africa are encouraged to apply.

The expected starting date of this assignment is April 2023 until December 2023. Please, note that this UN Youth Volunteer assignment is limited to a maximum duration of 9 months. Interested candidates should kindly bear this in mind when applying.

  • Conditions of Service.

Under the overall direction of the Chief – Emergency Response Section, the UN Volunteer will report to the head of the Information Management and Data Analytics team.

Under the direction and supervision of the Information Management Officer, the UNV shall undertake the following tasks related to data and Human rights: • Document the current data systems. • Identify workflows and data requirements. • Work closely with the unit, the broader section, geographic sections, in particular country desk officers, and OHCHR field presences to understand their business re-quirements, map their workflows and develop data solutions to meet their needs. • Help organize internal meetings and events. • Assist in the implementation of innovation projects, such as identifying and implement-ing innovative solutions for OHCHR’s work; assist in the implementation of new and ongoing IT and technology projects; support the transformation of data, knowledge and information into graphics/illustrations/videos. • Assist with knowledge sharing and knowledge management. • Assist in the roll-out of Office 365 across the Office. • Perform other related duties as requested by supervisor, as appropriate.

As part of the pilot programme “Ditch UNfair internship” the volunteer will be asked to con-tribute to the advocacy component of the project by providing feedback on how to improve OHCHR internship system, share stories and experience.

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are required to:- Strengthen their knowledge and understand-ing of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day)- Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country- Provide annual and end of assignment reports on UN Volunteer actions, re-sults and opportunities using UNV’s Volunteer Reporting Application- Contribute arti-cles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, news-letters, press releases, etc.- Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Vol-unteers- Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage rel-evant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service when-ever technically possible.

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for this assignment though any relevant academic and/or practical experience, in particular in the area of media, communications, audio-visual production, information technology, web design, user interface experience and SharePoint Online would be an advantage.

Applicants should be computer literate in standard software applications; have a demon-strated keen interest in the work of the United Nations with a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter, and have the demonstrated ability to successfully interact with indi-viduals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs - which includes willingness to un-derstand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Previous experience as a volunteer and/or experience of another culture, (i.e. studies, volunteer work, internship) would be highly regarded.

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this assignment, fluency in English is required, Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable (i.e. French, Arabic, Chinese, Russian or Spanish).

The UN Volunteer will be based in Geneva, Switzerland. Currently, there are no direct threats to UN personnel or assets within the country. It is the incumbent’s responsibility to comply with immigration, customs and health requirements while entering/exiting the country. The incumbent is responsible for finding and securing their own accommodation. Geneva is a cosmopolitan metropolis with modern amenities, cultural attractions, public transportation restaurants, and nightlife.

UN Volunteer entitlements and allowances: The purpose of the allowances and entitlements paid to UN Volunteers is to enable UN Volunteers to sustain a secure standard of living at the duty stations in line with United Nations standards without incurring personal costs. The allowances are in no way to be understood as compensation, reward, or salary in exchange for the UN Volunteer’s service.
