Org. Setting and Reporting This position is in the Office of Secretary-General’s Envoy on Youth. The Associate Public Information Officer reports to the Secretary-General’s Envoy on Youth. The Office of the Secretary-General's Envoy on Youth (OSGEY) plays a lead role in the UN's efforts on youth development, focusing on raising international awareness of and bringing attention to promoting youth rights and stronger youth participation in formulating, implementing and evaluating the various development, peace and security, human rights and humanitarian frameworks. The OSGEY plays a lead role in advancing the roll-out, implementation and monitoring of the UN Youth Strategy, "Youth2030", that guides the entire UN System’s work with and for young people and seeks to facilitate increased impact and expanded global, regional and country-level action to address the needs, build the agency and advance the rights of young people around the world. Advocating and effectively communicating with other UN Agencies/Departments, UN Country Teams, International Organizations, Member States, Media, Civil Society and most importantly young people and youth organizations all over the world is core to OSGEY’s work.

The focus on this job is formulating creative strategies to communicate with these diverse audiences and implementing those strategies in the form of concrete campaigns and initiatives online and offline.

This position is available for a period of up to 364 days with the possibility for extension.

Responsibilities Within delegated authority the Associate Public Information Officer will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Tracks, researches and analyzes information on assigned topics/issues; gathers information from diverse sources and helps to assess news value and other potential impact, as well as to evaluate the effectiveness of information campaigns.
  • Drafts/compiles a specific type or types (e.g. print, broadcast, etc.), of information communications products for target audiences, to include social media posts, press releases, media packets and reports, brochures, briefings, video clips, newsletters, websites, etc.
  • Organizes the clearance, production and distribution of information material; conducts photo and graphic research. •Manages OSGEY’s Social Media accounts, generating content and ensuring audience growth.
  • In consultation with others identifies and proposes information opportunities, activities and approaches, taking into account the situation/topic and target audience.
  • Identifies key contacts/constituencies and opportunities for strategic partnerships to elicit support to maximize the impact of key initiatives and campaigns led by OSGEY Organizes or participates in the organization of conferences, seminar, press briefings, interviews, etc.; prepares briefing materials for senior officials prior to their participation in such events.
  • Responds to a variety of inquires and information requests internally and externally; prepares related correspondence.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

    Education An advanced university degree (Master’s degree, or equivalent degree) in communication, journalism, marketing, political science or a related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

A first-level degree and no experience will be accepted for candidates who have passed the United Nations Young Professionals Programme Examination (YPP), the United Nations National Recruitment Examination (NCRE) or the General Service to Professional Examination (G to P).

Work Experience A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in public information, journalism, communications or a related area is required;

Experience with information technology and its application in work assignments is required.

Experience and applied skills and knowledge with digital media is required.

Work experience in development or human rights organization is desirable.

Work experience in business or new media organization is desired.

Work experience with youth-related initiatives/programmes is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another United Nations official language is desirable.
