Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located within the United Nations Investigative Team to promote accountability for crimes committed by Da'esh / ISIL (UNITAD) and will be based in Baghdad, Iraq. The Associate Public Information Officer reports to the Public Information Officer.

UNITAD was established by the Secretary-General pursuant to Security Council resolution 2379 (2017), according to which it is mandated to support domestic efforts to hold ISIL (Da'esh) accountable by collecting, preserving and storing evidence in Iraq of acts that may amount to war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide committed by the terrorist group ISIL (Da'esh) in Iraq.

Responsibilities Under the overall guidance and supervision of the Public Information Officer, the incumbents will be responsible for the following duties: 1. Manages outreach to media, civil society organizations, Government and National NGOs and builds capacity, a) Produces and disseminates information especially to local media and organizations about the Mission, its aims and activities and supports outreach activities and assists in interactions in local language(s), b) Develops partnerships with key national constituencies and working closely with national partners to raise visibility and understanding of the Mission’s work, c) Monitors and analyzes current events, public opinion and press; identifies issues and trends in country and helps to prepare notes to management on appropriate action/responses.

2. Builds and maintains partnerships and coordination lines with national partners and media , a) Develops strategic partnerships with key constituencies to elicit support for and maximize impact of public information objectives, raises visibility of the Mission by organizing and/or participating in seminars, lectures, conferences, public events on major issues and events concerning the organization. b) Serve as focal point with national media and partners’ public information and communications teams. c) Creates and updates national and international media networks and databases.

3. Prepares communications products and content, a) Drafts a diverse range of communication products in local languages(s) in support of unit priorities and works closely with departments and partners to develop ways to implement campaigns system-wide and to incorporate the campaign message and themes into all relevant events and products, b) Produces visual content like photographs and videos for regular and social media in line with platform specifications (e.g. Instagram posts, stories, and reels, twitter posts, YouTube videos, photo collages…etc.) c) Cater to the needs of the different departments as well as the Mission’s leadership. d) Drafts human interest stories for local and international audiences and produces digital content for the Mission’s social media platforms, e) Keeps abreast of changing developments, trends and political development in the Country; provides communication support to managers, senior officers and other public information staff on a range of public affairs issues, methods, and approaches, f) Contributes to reports to Mission leadership, UNHQ on communications activities, developments, trends and attitudes regarding the UN; and coordinates and shares public information activities and guidance with other sections of the Public Information Unit and leadership when appropriate. g) Coordinate with external contractors/consultants on different communication products (graphic designs, videography, photography, film-making etc.)

4. Provides support to internal communications a) Drafts copy for reports, newsletters, and other materials of interest to internal audiences. b) Ensures Mission’s internal communication is up to date and accurate.

5. Performs other duties as assigned.

Education Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in communication, journalism, international relations, public administration or related field. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in public information, journalism, international relations, public administration or related area is required .

Experience in developing and maintaining contacts and networks with the media, nongovernmental organizations, government officials, international and national organizations level is required.

Experience in photography, videography, film-making and basic graphic design is required.

Experience in drafting press releases, and other outreach material is required.

Experience working in/or with digital media is desirable.

Experience working with the United Nations or a comparable international organization is desirable.

Experience working in/or with traditional and private media is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English and Arabic is required.

NOTE: ''Fluency'' equals a rating of ''fluent'' in all four areas (speak, read, write, and understand).

Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by a competency-based interview.
