**OVERVIEW** ------------ Parent Sector : Natural Sciences Sector (SC) Duty Station: Paris Job Family: Natural Sciences Type of contract : Non Staff Level : Level 4 Duration of contract : From 7 to 11 months Recruitment open to : External candidates Application Deadline (Midnight Paris Time) : \[\[30-APRIL-2021\]\] UNESCO Core Values: Commitment to the Organization, Integrity, Respect for Diversity, Professionalism **OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST** ----------------------------------------- Under the overall supervision of the Director of the Division of Ecological and Earth Sciences, and under the direct supervision of the Chief of Section on Earth Sciences and Geo-Hazards Risk Reduction, the Assistant Project Officer shall contribute to the development, management and implementation of activities in the field of earth sciences. In particular, s/he will be expected to provide technical and coordinative support to the Secretariat of the UNESCO Global Geoparks under the International Geoscience and Geoparks Programme. Long Description ---------------- The incumbent shall in particular be required to perform the following tasks: • Assist with the statutory processes of the UNESCO Global Geoparks and in particular in the planning of the evaluation and revalidation missions: set up teams of senior and junior evaluators and connect them with the respective sites, follow up of sanitary conditions in respective countries, follow up on logistics, analyse mission reports and make them available for the UNESCO Global Geoparks Council members and Observers. • Help preparing the 1st UNESCO Global Geoparks Youth Forum. In consultation with the Global Geoparks Network (GGN) and with the host country of the 9th International Conference for UNESCO Global Geoparks in Jeju (Republic of Korea, September 2021), help raising funds for the organisation of the Youth forum, assist in Outreach and provide guidance to the youth representatives, assist in drafting the terms of reference and programme of the Youth forum. Long Description ---------------- • Assist in the preparation of a database of UNESCO Global Geoparks, in particular help mining data from application and revalidation files, define relevant attributes, collect additional data through a survey, assist in developing an appropriate platform and in raising funds to establish and maintain the database. • Assist in preparing the 1st African International Conference for UNESCO Global Geoparks, to be held in Arusha, Tanzania. In consultation with GGN and the Ngorongoro-Lengai UNESCO Global Geopark in Tanzania, help preparing the programme, establish a list of individuals and institutes to invite, prepare a dedicated training programme on UNESCO Global Geoparks, and assist with the mentorship programme for African site managers. Long Description ---------------- Additionally, the incumbent will offer her/his support in the following items: • Attend programme related meetings; • Assist in communication tasks of the team; • Perform any other duties as need arise. **COMPETENCIES (Core / Managerial)** ------------------------------------ Accountability (C) Communication (C) Innovation (C) Knowledge sharing and continuous improvement (C) Planning and organizing (C) Results focus (C) Teamwork (C) **-** ----- For detailed information, please consult the [UNESCO Competency Framework](https://en.unesco.org/sites/default/files/competency_framework_e.pdf). **REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS** --------------------------- ***Education*** - Advanced university degree (Master's or equivalent) in Natural, Environmental Sciences or related fields. ***Work Experience*** - A minimum of 2 years of progressively responsible and relevant professional in natural and/or environmental sciences experience at national or international level - Experience with the UNESCO Global Geoparks concept - Experience with training and capacity building events. ***Skills and Competencies*** - Excellent communication skills, both oral and written - Possesses excellent analytical skills - Ability to work as part of an international team in a multi-cultural environment - Excellent interpersonal skills and team spirit - Solid computer and other IT skills - Solid writing and editing skills in English - Familiar with Microsoft Office - Ability to manage heavy workloads and to meet tight deadlines, paying close attention to details. ***Languages*** - Excellent knowledge (written and spoken) of English/French and good knowledge of the other. **DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS** ---------------------------- ***Work Experience*** • Experience in implementation of projects is considered an asset. ***Language*** • Good knowledge of another UN language. **BENEFITS AND ENTITLEMENTS** ----------------------------- During the assignment period, the Assistant Project Officer shall work half-time (50%) from home, in respect with the sanitary measures imposed by UNESCO’s host country. The post is for an initial period of Eight (8) months with possibility of extension subject to availability of funds and satisfactory performance. 1 636 Euro approx. (Gross amount \[1\] per Month before tax for half time position) *The remuneration paid to the service contract (SC) holder is not exempt from any income taxes which may be levied by the French tax authorities. The SC Holder is affiliated to the French social security scheme (Régime général de la sécurité sociale et des prestations familiales). Consequently, the employees’ social contributions to this scheme will be deducted from the gross remuneration paid by the Organization.
