(The role of this vacant position does not include responsibility for UNESCO's wider external communications, which is managed by the Division for Communications and Public Engagement.)* Long Description ---------------- **OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST** Under the overall authority of the Assistant Director-General for Communication and Information, the authority of the Director of Division for Partnerships and Operational Programme Monitoring, and the direct supervision of the Chief of Section for Freedom of Expression and Safety of Journalists and of the relevant Programme Specialist in charge, the Incumbent will work towards achievement of UNESCO’s objective to address challenges and opportunities on freedom of expression, particularly the safety of journalists and the issue of impunity, in line with the 41 C/5 Major Programme V's Main Line of Action l, Expected Result 1. In particular, the Incumbent will work towards the achievement of the extra-budgetary projects “Strengthening the role of judicial actors on Freedom of Expression and Safety of Journalists in Africa”, funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, “Fostering the Role of the Judiciary Systems in promoting Freedom of Expression and Safety of Journalists” funded by Open Society Foundations, and the Multi-Donor Programme on Freedom of Expression and the Safety of Journalists. Long Description ---------------- The post is located in the Freedom of Expression and Safety of Journalists Section of the Communication and Information Sector (CI/FEJ) at UNESCO Headquarters. The incumbent will work in a collaborative team environment and will be responsible to undertake the following: - Contribute to the implementation of UNESCO’s Judges’ Initiative, which aims to train members of the judiciary (including judges, prosecutors and lawyers) on freedom of expression and safety of journalists international and regional standards, including by organizing on-the-ground and online trainings and workshops, liaising with relevant partners and networks of the judiciary, and contributing to the development and dissemination of a number of tools and resources for the judiciary, including Massive Open Online Courses, toolkits, guidelines and issue briefs; - Contribute to the preparation and organization of international and regional conferences, including World Press Freedom Day (3 May) and the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists (2 November), by supporting the preparation and development of a number of events, liaising with organizing partners and relevant networks of media and judicial actors, and privacy commissioners, developing communication materials and producing relevant outcome documents; - For the above activities, conduct research, support the compilation of references of judicial decisions to be added in a databank, and contact judicial networks from various regions to engage them in the global project of training judges and judiciary members, as well as develop Memoranda of Understanding with networks of judicial actors and international courts to strengthen cooperation on international standards on freedom of expression and safety of journalists; - Organize and contribute to awareness raising and capacity development activities for the judiciary and law enforcement globally, and contribute to relevant training materials; - Support the Section in the drafting and editing of information material, website articles, concept notes, speeches, correspondence, briefings, project proposals, policy guidelines, agreements and other documents related to the implementation of the projects and in the areas relating to freedom of expression and safety of journalists.
