The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system, and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The overall objective of the UNEP's Ecosystems Division is sup-ports countries in conserving, restoring, and sustainably managing their terrestrial, freshwater, and marine ecosystems, the biodiversity they contain, and the products and services they provide for human well-being and prosperity. It addresses the environmental causes and consequences of disasters and conflicts. It helps countries reduce pollution from land-based activities, increase resilience to climate change and reflect linkages between poverty and the environment in their development planning. The position is located in the Ecosystems Division of UNEP under the Ecosystems Integration Branch, Regional Seas Unit.

Under the direct supervision of Programme Management Officer, Regional Seas Unit, Ecosystems Integration Branch, Ecosystems Division the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

Programme Management support – 70%

· Support the Head of Ecosystems Integration Branch and the Programme Management Officer, Regional Seas Unit to develop project funding proposals and concept notes for Poverty Environment Nexus Unit and the Regional Seas Programme. · Contribute to the preparation of Programme Coordination Project (PCP) Child Projects for implementation of Regional Seas programme and Poverty and Environment Nexus Programme of Work activities and support their implementation. · Support to keep track and draft briefing notes for the Head of Branch on topical issues, missions and events including on-going global processes such as the Intergovernmental Negotiations Committee on Plastics, marine biological diversity of areas beyond national jurisdiction (BBNJ), Intergovernmental Panel on Chemicals and Waste, Global Biodiver-sity Framework, etc. · Carry out basic research on select topics of the Regional Seas Programme and Poverty and Environment Nexus to support implementation of its Programme of Work activities. · Contributes to the preparation of various written outputs, e.g., draft background papers, analytical notes, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications, etc. · Provide support to organize meetings, trainings, and conferences of the Ecosystems In-tegration Branch such as proposing agenda topics, identifying and proposed participants, preparing background documents and presentations, handling logistics, etc. · Compile Division Director’s quarterly reports from UNEP-administered Regional Seas Programme, Poverty Environment Nexus and IEMP including providing relevant update from the Regional Seas Programme Unit on time.

Communication support 30%

· Develop a communication strategy for the Ecosystems Integration Branch. · Draft web stories, policy briefs, news articles, social media messages for twitter, Insta-gram and Facebook, etc. · Compile news articles and disseminate the Regional Seas weekly newsletter. · Regularly update the Regional Seas website and produce any communication material that is decided upon. · Liaise on outreach and advocacy activities with Communications Division on the Regional Seas Programme and Poverty and Environment Nexus.

Professionalism Communication Planning and organizing Working in teams

project or programme management, administration, or a related area is required.

Experience in project management, drafting project proposals, organizing intergovernmental meetings, and supporting communication is required. Experience in working for an intergovernmental organization, United Nations or similar organizations is desirable.

The Republic of Kenya is an equatorial nation on the coast of East Africa, neighboring Somalia, Ethiopia, Sudan, Uganda, Tanzania, and the Indian Ocean. Kenya has two levels of Government; National Government and 47 sub-national Governments called Counties. Counties are further divided into sub-coun-ties. Kenya is a multi-party state with Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches. Kenya’s population of more than 40 million is growing at an annual rate of 2.2%. The country’s GNP per capita estimated at purchasing power parity (PPP) is $975, and the GNP is growing at an average rate of 0.1% annually. More than 26% of Kenya’s people live below the international poverty line of $1 per day. Kenya’s main food crops are “maize, wheat, pulses, roots and tubers.” (FAO).

Nairobi is a modern metropolitan city where most basic goods and services, health facilities, public transport, telecommunication and banking services, and educational facilities are readily available. The city is widely connected through its main airport, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, and the smaller Wilson Airport. Air transport is also available to many upcountry destinations. The city is home to some 3,000 UN personnel mainly attributed to the fact that it serves as the headquarters for both the UN-HABITAT and UNEP.

The socio-economic and cultural background of the immediate society the UNV would be living and working in is diverse and prevailing security conditions at the place of the assignment are modest. The topographic and climatic features of the assignment location are a highland cool and warm tropical climate.
