Org. Setting and Reporting

This post is located within the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC) team of the Geneva Branch of the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA). The incumbent will report to a P3 Political Affairs Officer within the BWC team. For more information on the BWC, please refer to https://www.un.org/disarmament/biological-weapons. This position is funded through extrabudgetary funds provided by the European Union in support of the BWC.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Associate Political Affairs Officer will be responsible for the following duties: • Supports the implementation of extrabudgetary projects in support of the BWC in all relevant aspects, in particular the Youth for Biosecurity Initiative. • Supports the planning and conduct of project activities, such as the Youth for Biosecurity fellowship, workshops, seminars and other planned activities. • Liaises with relevant youth groups, donor representatives, implementing partners, etc., as necessary. • Analyses information contained in communications and publications received from different sources, including the press; maintains up-to-date knowledge of events relating to political issues in a specified area or subject matter; • Assists senior official with briefing notes, background papers and talking points. • Prepares summaries of articles from a wide variety of sources and draft a variety of correspondence, and sections of reports. • Monitors political, socio-economic, and other politically relevant developments in an assigned area. • Creates databases that track project progress and provides other information relevant to assigned area. • Performs other related duties as required.

Education

An advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent degree) in political science, international relations, international economics, law, public administration or other related area is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience

A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security, development management, conflict resolution or related area is required. Experience in supporting project management activities, including organization, implementation and outreach on activities and events is required. Experience in drafting official correspondence and reports as well as undertaking political and/or legal research is desirable. Experience with the Biological Weapons Convention and/or youth engagement initiatives is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which will be followed by a competency-based interview.
