This is a UNV International Youth contract. This kind of contract is known as International UN Volunteer. It is normally internationally recruited only. More about UNV International Youth contracts.

Description of task

Under the direct supervision of Health Planning Advisor, the UN Youth Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

  • Works closely with assigned team to ensure WHO gender and youth activities are implemented according to standard operating procedures (SOP’s).
  • Assist to provide monitoring data and other information to capture progress on project outcomes, indicators and targets and support project team in data analysis and annual work planning;
  • Assists with publications, web pages, and presentations;

  • Support to monitor and maintain protocols, instruments, data sets, manuals, training materials and reports organized;

  • Support the development of donor briefs, background papers for a diverse array of activities for senior management.
  • As part of the team the youth volunteers will seek external support from women’s organizations, key female and male decision makers, youth leaders and allies where necessary;
  • Works with communities and partners to maximize local capacity;
  • Support to develop training/IEC materials for the project to ensure that these are youth, gender and context sensitive;

Qualifications/Requirements

Required degree level:

Bachelor degree or equivalent

Education - Additional Comments:

Degree in Economics, Education, Environment, Health, Human Development, Information Science, International Development, Social Sciences or Related Field related field from an accredited/recognized institute.

Required experience:

Experience remark:

  • Demonstrated interest and/or experience (up to 2 years) in projects with strong youth and gender mainstreaming/women’s rights focus
  • Previous experience as a volunteer and/or experience of another culture, (i.e. studies, volunteer work, internship) would be highly regarded;

Learning Expectations

Learning and development are a central part of the UN Youth Volunteer’s assignment and take place before, during and after his or her assignment in the field. Ideally, offering diverse opportunities for learning and development aim to strengthen the volunteer’s skills and competences, improve the quality of the assignment and keep the volunteer’s motivation high.

Learning elements for the UN Youth Volunteer include the development of:

  • Professional skills: including specific competencies and reflection on assignment-related abilities; and on-the-job skills such as time management, problem solving, team building; and career preparedness such as interview skills, CV preparation, job searching.

  • Interpersonal skills: including communication and listening skills; multi-cultural awareness and cultural competency; and conflict and stress management.

  • Volunteering-related skills: including leadership; civic responsibility; and engagement and active participation.

Beyond the learning opportunities provided by UNV, the host agency will support knowledge and capacity development in the technical areas that are relevant to the UN Youth Volunteer’s assignment. The host agency will provide, at its expense, UN Youth Volunteers with equal opportunity to participate in training courses and workshops offered to its personnel.

UN Youth Volunteers should be between 18 and 29 years old throughout the duration of their service.
