Contract

This is a UNV International Youth contract. This kind of contract is known as International UN Volunteer. It is normally internationally recruited only. More about UNV International Youth contracts.

Trafficking in persons and smuggling of migrants (TIP and SOM) are two of the most pervasive forms of organized crime in the Arab States. Factors such as poverty, conflict and lack of equal opportunity make some individuals, especially women and children, at greater risk of trafficking. Given their situation, irregular migrants are more vulnerable to smuggling and trafficking and they make up for 60 per cent of the detected victims of trafficking in the Middle East and 25 per cent in North Africa. The Arab States are particularly prone to TIP and SOM as countries of the region are origin, transit, and destination countries for irregular migration. Despite existing normative international and continental frameworks, many Arab countries continue to face challenges in preventing and countering TIP and SOM, and how to address their drivers and enablers. This can be attributed to the lack of capacities, capabilities, sufficient financial resources, and regional coordination and cooperation to prevent and counter TIP and SOM, coupled with a lack of accurate and updated data and evidence-based research on flexible and changing migration patterns and routes, all necessary to inform policy planning and decision making. The UN Volunteer will be supporting the UNODC TIP and SOM team based in Cairo, Egypt, with the development, implementation, coordination, monitoring, evaluation, reporting, and visibility of projects under UNODC’s TIP and SOM portfolio in the MENA region.

The UN Volunteer shall support UNODC in fulfilling its mission to contribute to global peace and security, human rights and development by making the world safer from drugs, crime, corruption and terrorism by working for and with Member States to promote justice and the rule of law and build resilient societies.

Under the direct supervision of Binija Goperma, Regional Programme Coordinator (Anti-Human Trafficking and Migrant Smuggling), the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

•Support the planning, organization, and delivery of project activities, such as work-shops, training courses, study tours, official meetings, and other project-related activi-ties under the TIP and SOM portfolio; •Assist with the preparation and dissemination of evaluation/feedback reports upon completion of activities and support the compilation and consolidation of the responses; •Support to conduct needs assessment consultations with relevant counterparts; •Support project development and reporting by preparing/drafting concept notes, project proposals, Terms of References, projects reports, annual workplans, and other sup-porting documents in relation to projects on combatting TIP and SOM; •Contribute to the preparation and drafting of various documents such as thematic and/or geographic research, background papers, correspondence with national coun-terparts, speeches, presentations, working papers, mission reports, policy proposals, and other relevant documents in relation to combatting TIP and SOM; •Support the monitoring and evaluation of projects by assisting in monitoring the achievement of indicators and documenting good practices/lessons learned from TIP and SOM projects; •Support the communication and visibility activities under the TIP and SOM portfolio in close coordination with the relevant Programme Coordinators and the Communication Officer, including through contributing to the design, drafting, and dissemination of communication media (webstories, brochures, project sheets, publications on ROME-NA social networks); •Support the preparation, organization, and reporting on expert/project staff missions and technical meetings, as required; •Assist with the translation of relevant documents, as needed; •Take notes during meetings and carry out administrative tasks, as requested by super-visor. •Perform other related duties as requested by supervisor, as appropriate.
