  • Master’s degree in law, international law, criminal investigation, or related fields is desirable.

The salary for this job should be between 75,132 USD and 102,048 USD.

Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the Field Investigations Unit-6 (FIU6) of the Office of Field Investigations (OFI) in the United Nations Investigative Team to promote accountability for crimes committed by Da'esh / ISIL (UNITAD). The Associate Legal officer (Investigations) will report to the team's Investigator.

UNITAD was established by the Secretary-General pursuant to Security Council resolution 2379 (2017), according to which it is mandated to support domestic efforts to hold ISIL (Da'esh) accountable by collecting, preserving and storing evidence in Iraq of acts that may amount to war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide committed by the terrorist group ISIL (Da'esh) in Iraq.

Responsibilities Within delegated authority, the Associate Legal Officer may be responsible for the following duties:

•Conducts legal research on a diverse range of assigned issues in international criminal law and other area(s) of specialization using multiple research sources; selects relevant material, analyzes information and presents findings for internal review. •Assists Legal Officers in the review of legal documents, instruments, or other material; identifies important issues, similarities and inconsistencies, etc. - Assists in the preparation of drafts of background papers, studies, reports, etc. - Assists in the preparation of legal opinions/advice on a wide range of international public law issues, including the United Nations Charter, General Assembly resolutions and decisions involving, inter alia, issues relating to peace and security, and international criminal law and international humanitarian law. •Assists in conducting investigations to support domestic efforts to hold ISIL (Da'esh) accountable. •Participates in the investigative team and carries out investigative and analytical tasks and activities. •Assists in conducting interviews and obtaining statements; analyzing information. •Participates in the preparation of concise investigation and analytical reports and conduct of post investigation activities. •Assesses the relevance or admissibility of evidence gathered by investigators. •Performs other duties as assigned.

Education First-level university degree in law is required. Master’s degree in law, international law, criminal investigation, or related fields is desirable.

Work Experience A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in law, including legal analysis, research and writing is required.

A minimum of one year of full time progressively responsible experience in investigation in cases involving serious breaches of international criminal law and international humanitarian law, such as genocide, crimes against humanity war crimes is required.

Experience with an international criminal tribunal, international criminal investigative entity, or other international accountability mechanism, collecting evidence, information, and data in a field mission environment, is required.

Experience in working in investigations or intelligence analysis in relation to ISIL (Da'esh) or in relation to another complex criminal groups/entities, is required.

Experience with an international or multilateral public institution is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of Arabic is desirable.

Note: "Fluency" equals a rating of 'fluent' in all four areas (speak, read, write, and understand) and "Knowledge of" equals a rating of 'confident' in two of the four areas.
