Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located primarily in the Multimedia Resources Unit (MRU) of the Audiovisual Services Section (AVSS), of the Coverage and Media Services Branch (CMSB), in the News and Media Division (NMD), of the Department of Global Communications (DGC). The Unit provides audiovisual library and archival services and distributes multimedia contents to internal and external professional clients. It also provides design, development, and technical support for multimedia websites and specialized applications. The incumbent reports to the Chief of the Multimedia Resources Unit.

This position is temporarily available for six (6) months with a possibility of extension.

Responsibilities Within delegated authority, the Associate Information Management Officer will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Provides audiovisual library services to production areas of DGC and external clients, including needs and business process analysis; organization and maintenance of digital media and information assets; multimedia assets access, preservation and disposition; and multimedia management policies and procedures, with an emphasis on multimedia content management systems and solutions applied to news and media production.

  • Designs and develops the UN media websites and ensures the proper dissemination of multimedia contents; assists in the oversight of the material on the web pages maintained by the Audiovisual Services Section; Assists in developing the UN multimedia websites and conducting its on-going maintenance, including the editorial process and oversight of updates to the Drupal Content Management System, CSS, HTML and other front-end multimedia website maintenance tasks.

  • Researches, analyses and evaluates new applications of information management tools to audiovisual archives and records management and makes recommendations for their deployments.

  • Manages projects related to multimedia asset management systems, digital archiving, multimedia website design and maintenance to comply with Departmental polices related to multilingualism, accessibility, branding and contents management best practices.

  • Develops detailed substantive functional requirements and standards from the digital asset management perspective and user documentation for new platforms applied to news and media production, distribution, promotion and archiving workflows.

  • Oversees the digital audiovisual records accessioning process; provides training in the use of metadata standards for the capture, maintenance and accessioning of digital archives; and manages system upgrades and migration for digital archives databases.

  • Supervises and undertakes audiovisual records accession and disposition functions, including records appraisal, by liasing with records-creating offices on the transfer and/or disposal of records and analysing and evaluating records for evidential and informational value in support of records appraisal.

  • Supervises and undertakes audiovisual archival processing activities by producing descriptive inventories; prepares mark-up of inventories for electronic dissemination; and monitors adherence to description, database and preservation standards.

  • Manages audiovisual archival processing activities by overseeing adherence to preservation, international bibliographic, description and database standards; produces descriptive inventories; prepares mark-up of descriptive inventories for electronic dissemination; and makes recommendations regarding the planning and prioritisation of preservation and description programme requirements.

  • Supervises junior staff relating to the functions cited above.

  • Performs other related duties as required.

Knowledge of the full range of information and multimedia assets management approaches, tools, and methodologies applied to audiovisual archives and library domains. Knowledge of digital media life-cycle and workflows covering ingestion, technical processing, metadata maintenance, distribution, and archiving. Knowledge of electronic data maintenance, including appraisal, conservation and migration management; records preservation and description. Education An advanced university degree (Master's or equivalent) in archival, information science, information technology, information systems, social science or related field. A first-level degree (Bachelor's degree or equivalent) in the specified fields of studies with two additional years of relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in multimedia web design and development, modern archives management, record keeping, library, information management or related area is required.

Experience with audio-visual archiving, multimedia assets management or related fields is desirable.

Experience in digital management systems and service solutions, maintenance and support of multimedia website support and maintenance where audio, video and photo are the primary contents as well as web-based distribution systems, tools, methods, and procedures, is desirable.

Experience with programming in PHP/HTML/CSS/JavaScript/Node.js and other web development tools is desirable.

Experience in developing and deployment of integrated web-based projects, with multiple developers across multiple environments is desirable.

Experience with Drupal Content Management System configuration, theming and modules development is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
