This is a UNV International Specialist contract. This kind of contract is known as International UN Volunteer. It is normally internationally recruited only. More about UNV International Specialist contracts.

Eligibility criteria

Minimum age: 25 years old. Nationals of the country of assignment are not eligible, except the assignments in Headquarters duty stations.

Description of task

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of a Human Rights Officer, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

  • Participate, as part of a team, in monitoring the human rights situation, including identifying emerging trends and patterns of human rights violations;
  • Provide support to liaising with relevant partners and stakeholders, including civil society organizations, national human rights institutions and international organizations, and foster and maintain their active engagement in the work of OHCHR in Ukraine;
  • Facilitate engagement with communities and human right defenders, particularly youth, to raise awareness of human rights and advocate for compliance with international human rights norms and standards;
  • Assist in conducting monitoring, research and information/data assessment to help produce analytical papers, reports, press briefing notes and other advocacy material in relation to the human rights situation in Ukraine;
  • Provide analysis of relevant legal and legislative acts vis-à-vis international human rights and international humanitarian law standards, and contribute to the drafting of the relevant analytical notes and advocacy letters;
  • Ensure the timely submission of written joint UNCT contributions to UN human rights mechanisms and promote the implementation of UN human rights recommendations concerning Ukraine;
  • Contribute to the analysis and monitoring of the new National Human Rights Strategy and Action Plan and provide technical expertise to the Ministry of Justice for the development of a monitoring and evaluation methodology for the implementation of the strategy and action plan;
  • Contribute to OHCHR’s periodic and ad hoc reports, bearing in mind OHCHR’s guidance on results-based management;
  • Provide inputs to various written communications such as talking points and briefing notes on relevant substantive/thematic issues;
  • Provide administrative and logistical support, including organizing events/meetings and field visits;
  • Perform any other duties as assigned.

Qualifications/Requirements

Required degree level:

Master degree or equivalent

Education - Additional Comments:

International Human Rights Law, International Humanitarian Law, Political Science, International Relations, or a related field from an accredited academic institution.

Required experience:

24 Months

Experience remark:

  • Demonstrated interest and/or experience (minimum 2 years) in human rights law, international humanitarian law, political affairs, international relations, law or related area.
  • Experience working in a conflict or post-conflict setting is desirable.
  • Human rights monitoring and/or reporting experience is desirable.

Language skills:

  • English(Mandatory), Level - Fluent
  • Russian(Mandatory), Level - Fluent
  • Ukrainian(Optional), Level - Working Knowledge

Area of expertise:

Human rights, Political affairs and political reporting, Other rule of law or governance related experience
