Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the Office of the Chief of Staff of the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA), duty station Abyei. The incumbent will report to the Gender Affairs Officer.

Responsibilities Within delegated authority, the Associate Gender Affairs Officer will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Assist the Gender Affairs Officer in the design and implementation of a mission-wide action plan, as appropriate, to translate existing policies and mandates on the promotion of gender equality in all activities of the peacekeeping mission and support the delivery of appropriate training for different levels of personnel where required, to facilitate implementation of the plan.

  • Carry out research on selected aspects gender equality issues including collecting, analyzing and presenting statistical data and other information gathered from diverse sources to assist in the preparation of advice which may be provided by the Gender Team to the management team, as a contribution towards the efforts of mainstreaming gender and women, peace and security concerns into the mission mandate, or in preparation for other outputs of the office, such as outreach programmes for training community protection committees and other similar mechanisms and their larger populations to build and expand capacity for gender analysis and the design of gender-sensitive policies and programmes.

  • Participate in and draft substantive contributions to the work of established inter-agency coordination mechanisms for gender mainstreaming and partnership efforts with UN agencies that have complementary mandates for the promotion of women and girl’s rights.

  • Monitors the implementation of the women, peace and security agenda in the mission and drafts, provides substantive inputs for periodic reports, briefings and speeches on women, peace and security issues.

  • Supports the delivery of gender training for all levels of civilian and uniformed personnel in the mission.

  • Contribute to the support, liaison and partnerships with civil society organizations and women groups ensuring that all information and outreach activities of the Mission reach and involve women as well as men using knowledge of own country culture and language and mobilizes and builds the capacity of women groups and conducts advocacy with local leaders on the promotion of women and children’s rights.

  • Assist Gender Affairs Officers with consultation as necessary with counterparts in the Office of the DPO Gender Advisor at UN Headquarters.

  • Contribute to the implementation of reporting obligations, documentation of good practices, the preparation of policy papers and related submissions for senior mission leaders and DPO.

  • Conduct fact finding to assist senior officers in the Section/Unit in monitoring resources, preparing or reporting on budgets and identifying resource specific technical/management problems.

Education An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in law, human rights, international relations, social studies, gender studies or related area. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree

Work Experience Two years of progressively responsible experience in policy development and/or programme implementation related to gender equality and/or women's rights is required.

Proven expertise for integrating gender perspectives into mainstream policies or programmes is required.

Experience working in the United Nations Common System or a comparable international organization is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position, fluency in spoken and written English is required. Knowledge of Arabic and other local languages is an advantage.

Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
