This is a UNV International Specialist contract. This kind of contract is known as International UN Volunteer. It is normally internationally recruited only. More about UNV International Specialist contracts.

Description of task

Under the direct supervision of the Assistant Representative Programme, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

  • Keep abreast of political, cultural and social developments and UNHCR’s humanitarian programmes to prepare appropriate briefings and reports;
  • Draft reports in English and French, including regular operational updates, internal sitreps, briefing notes and talking points;
  • Support the supervisor in organising meetings and briefings with donors and partners, and prepare the required documentation for participants and minutes;
  • Attend inter-agency meetings/cluster meetings at the request of the supervisor,
  • Organize and accompany missions for external counterparts to visit refugee sites;
  • Monitor and guide the implementation of specific donor requirements, such as donor visibility;
  • Support Programme Unit in preparation of COP and in all reporting requireemtns
  • Assist the implementation of the Goma sub-office’s communications strategy in order to generates support for UNNHCR’s operations from external partners (e.g. the general public, governments, partners, media, academia, NGOs, private sector and persons of concern);
  • Promote visibility of UNHCR’s work and advocate for support for persons of concern through providing inputs for social media and other web content;
  • Plan and conduct campaigns and activities with organised groups and local authorities to disseminate information on UNHCR and raise public awareness on refugee and internal displacement issues;
  • Propose and organize events and initiatives (e.g. commercial, cultural, political and sports) to promote the work of UNHCR;
  • Liaise with the media, in close coordination with the External Relations Office in Bukavu and Senior Regional External Relations Officer in Kinshasa;
  • Support drafting of Donor reports;
  • Perform other duties as required by the supervisor and/or the head of the office.

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are required to:

  • Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day);
  • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country;
  • Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary action that they are undertaking, including participation in ongoing reflection activities;
  • Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.;
  • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers;
  • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

Experience remark

A minimum 2 years of experience in a field related to external relations, communications, media relations or reporting.

Language skills

  • French(Mandatory), Level - Fluent
  • English(Optional), Level - Working Knowledge

  • Good analytical skills;
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills in a multi-cultural setting;
  • Ability to live and work in the difficult and harsh conditions of developing countries is essential.

Computer skills:

Knowledge of computer software (MS Word, Excel PowerPoint), as well as the capacity to use mapping tools, i.e. GPS and knowledge of construction drawing and design software (AutoCad or MS Visio, Hipanet etc) is a great added advantage.
