Org. Setting and Reporting This position is temporarily available from 15 April 2022 to 31 December 2022. If the selected candidate is a staff member from the United Nations Secretariat, the selection will be administered as a temporary assignment.

The post is located in the Water Unit of the Transboundary Cooperation section of the Environment Division (ENV) of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) based in Geneva, Switzerland.

The broad aim of UNECE's environment activities is to safeguard the environment and human health, and to promote sustainable development in line with the 2030 Agenda.

Responsibilities Under the direct supervision of the Secretary to the Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes (Water Convention), the incumbent will perform the following functions:

- Assisting in the preparation for, servicing and follow-up of meetings of subsidiary bodies established by the Meetings of the Parties to the Convention and to its Protocol on Water and Health (e.g. Working Groups, Bureau) and the sixth session of the Meeting of the Parties to the Protocol; - Assisting in the preparation of activities related to 2023 UN Conference on the Water Action Decade; - Assisting in the preparation of global workshops under the Water Convention; - Assisting in the preparation of activities devoted to the thirtieth anniversary of the adoption of the Water Convention; - Drafting background documents, reports and minutes of meetings, discussion papers, studies, publications and other documentation; - Undertaking various administrative tasks including donor correspondence and financial reports; - Providing support to the Division and other parts of the Organization on substantive, administrative and cross-cutting issues; - Assisting in the process of contracting consultants, individual contractors and other experts in preparation of relevant documents and research studies through drafting terms of reference, - Supporting preparation of publications; - Establishing and maintaining contacts with national focal points and other relevant contacts, - Drafting correspondence and providing information to delegations, as required; - Liaising with non-governmental organizations, intergovernmental organizations and the private sector; - Supporting the awareness-raising and capacity-building activities to facilitate effective implementation of the Convention, including through cooperation with partner organizations; - Supporting use of social media tools for sharing of information and good practices on different topics and maintaining relevant pages of the Convention’s website.

Uses time efficiently.

Education An advanced university degree (Master’s or Doctorate degree, or equivalent) in environmental management, international relations, policy, governance, government administration or related fields is required. A first-level degree (Bachelor’s degree or equivalent) in the specified fields of studies with two additional years of relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience Minimum of 2 years of progressively responsible professional experience in environmental affairs or sustainable development at international level is required.

Experience with servicing multi-stakeholder intergovernmental processes, preferably in connection with global or regional environmental legal instruments is required.

Experience in organizing large-scale intergovernmental meetings is desirable.

Experience in developing communication materials and campaigns on environmental issues is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of French, Russian. or Spanish is desirable.
