Support UNHCR in enhancing disaster risk reduction initiatives.
You have:
- 3 years of experience in managerial roles related to DRR programs or environmental-related activities in humanitarian contexts.
- Fluency in English is mandatory.
- Fluency in Spanish is mandatory.
- Educational qualification in fields like Architecture, Civil Engineering, Environmental Sciences, or Agriculture is required.
- Proficiency in using MS Office applications and mapping tools.
- Ability to work independently and manage tight deadlines is essential.
Contract
This is a UNV International Specialist contract. This kind of contract is known as International UN Volunteer. It is normally internationally recruited only. More about UNV International Specialist contracts.
Description of task
Under the direct supervision of Snr. Operations Officer, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:
- Provide technical support and guidance to UNHCR offices in the country and partners on activities within the areas of DRR through:
1. Facilitating the promotion of DRR in disaster prone communities by:
- Ensuring that UNHCR Country Office and Field Units in the country are supported in carrying assessments related to DRR taking into account the current situation and projected population planning figures.
- Identifying and initiate activities to enhance risk reductions skills of targeted communities
- Identifying pilot initiatives in DRR in select communities
- Conducting capacity and vulnerability assessment in identified communities.
- Facilitating the development of contingency plans in targeted communities.
- Conducting awareness raising activities on community-based disaster risk management
2. Building the capacity of field staff and community stakeholders in the implementation of the activities by:
- Identifying the training needs of staff from partners and community members in DRR activities
- Developing a capacity building plan for the staff from partners and community members on DRR activities
- Facilitating trainings for staff from partners and community members in DRR
- In consultation with UNHCR’s implementing partner and local communities themselves, identifying the need for community based Quick Impact Projects (QIPs) that can benefit the local and displaced communities on DRR.
- Ensuring that where possible UNHCR activities implemented at field and national level will contribute to DRR´s objectives.
3. Supervising the implementation of the project activities in the field
- Provide oversight to the work of the supervisors/trainers/facilitators.
- Work closely with operations team for the implementation of project activities
- Monitor and document field level activities.
- Prepares and monitors budgets for all sub projects
- Ensure UNHCR is represented in forums related to DRR at local and country level and with other relevant actors/technical coordination platforms as necessary.

Area of expertise details
- Knowledge of computer software (MS Word, Excel PowerPoint), as well as the capacity to use mapping tools, i.e. GPS and knowledge of construction drawing and design software (AutoCad or MS Visio, Hipanet etc) is a great added advantage.
- Have affinity with or interest in humanitarian relief, post-conflict situations, volunteerism as a mechanism for durable development, and the UN System;
- Excellent oral and written skills; excellent drafting, formulation, reporting skills;
- Accuracy and professionalism in document production and editing;
- Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.) and email/internet; familiarity with database management; and office technology equipment;
- Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines;
- Sound security awareness;
