Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the Policy Planning Team of the Policy and Best Practices Service (PBPS) of the Division for Policy, Evaluation and Training (DPET) in the Department of Peace Operations (DPO). The Associate Data Analyst reports to the Coordination Officer, P4 leading the Policy Planning Team.

DPO provides political and executive direction to UN Peacekeeping operations and maintains contact with the Security Council, troop and financial contributors, and parties to the conflict in the implementation of Security Council mandates. The Department works to integrate the efforts of UN, governmental and non-governmental entities in the context of peacekeeping operations.

The Policy and Best Practices Service (PBPS) is part of the Policy Evaluation and Training Division (DPET) of the Department of Peace Operations. It provides support to both DPO and DOS. The core function of PBPS is to help improve the efficiency and effectiveness of peacekeeping operations through the exchange of good practices between missions, the development of guidance material that reflects lessons learned, and thematic policy support in selected areas. PBPS also leads several reform processes.

Responsibilities Within delegated authority, the Associate Data Analyst will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Acquires and cleans data from primary or secondary sources and maintain databases/data systems.
  • Implements databases, data collection systems, data analytics and other strategies that optimize statistical efficiency and quality.
  • Identifies, analyzes, and interprets trends or patterns, using basic machine learning techniques, statistical methods to identify relevant features and variables in structured sources of information and data, and to develop corporate visualization solutions.
  • Tracks and reports on progress regarding department specific data initiatives.
  • Develops reports, dashboards or other tools to effectively summarize findings and convey information to management
  • Guides and trains staff in the function.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

    Education Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in computer science, data science, analytics, statistics, information management, or a related field. A first level university degree with a combination of relevant academic qualifications and professional experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

    Work Experience A minimum of two years of experience in applied analytics, business intelligence, information management, statistics, project management, stakeholder management or related area is required.

    Experience in using data to advance decisions, strategies and execution is required.

    Experience with self-service analytics and data visualization applications (MS PowerBI, Qlik, Tableau or similar), or business intelligence tools (SAP Business Objects, etc.) is desirable.

    Experience in tools managing version control such as Git is desirable.

    Experience with database or programming languages (SQL, Python, R) is desirable.

    Audio editing skills to produce a podcast series desirable.

    Languages Fluency in one of the working languages of the UN Secretariat, English or French, (both oral and written) is required; knowledge of the other is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.

    Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
