This announcement broadcasts international assignment with the Digital Outreach Section, located within the Communications and Public Mobilization Section, part of the External Outreach and Partnership Service (EOS). The Communications and Public Mobilization Section launches communications initiatives to mobilize and engage with a variety of audiences, develops content to raise awareness about human rights and showcase our impact, and works to increase the visibility of UN Human Rights.

Based in Geneva, Switzerland, under the overall direction of the Chief of Branch and general guidance the Chief of the Communications and Public Mobilization Section, the volunteer reports to the Head of the Digital Outreach Unit, Public Information Officer in the Section.

The volunteer will be mentored by the Head of the Digital Outreach Unit.

This UNV assignment is offered in the context of a programme bringing qualified candidates from the developing economies to volunteer with OHCHR. Candidates from developing economies in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, Middle East and North Africa are encouraged to apply.

The expected starting date of this assignment is 01.05.2023 and until 31.12.2023. Please, note that this UN Youth Volunteer assignment is limited to a maximum duration of 8 months.

UN International Youth Volunteer assignments are always without family.

Under the supervision of the head of the Digital Outreach Unit, the UNV will support OHCHR’s Social Media operations and will be tasked with:

• Assist in the planning, development and execution of social media content; and Provide specialized support for multimedia products such as Tiktok and Instagram Reel, as well as other platforms. Contribute to OHCHR's public information outreach campaigns planned in 2023, particularly the 75th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Support these campaigns through creative storytelling, content creation, influencer outreach. Anticipate and support other major UN events or activities. • Grow OHCHR's Tiktok account. Leverage Tiktok as a key pillar in efforts to strengthen global youth engagement with human rights topics, with goals of increasing awareness, consideration, participation and retention. • Develop a portfolio of educational partners, media partners, and influencers (celebrities and rights defenders). Feature them wherever appropriate in OHCHR stories and ensure that they share the resulting OHCHR products with their own followers. Responsible for every step of this process, including cold-calling, follow-up, influencer relationship management. • Help in the drafting of joint messages for social media partners & UN Human Rights social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn. Develop campaign calendars and creative briefs. Collaborate with Editorial, Audiovisual, Graphic Design, Web units, in the Communications Section, as well as the Media Section, to ensure effective assets development and consistent narrative across messaging. Promote content across social and digital channels. • Develop a social media/marketing plan to expand OHCHR's presence on youth-oriented platforms and create related content: Produce and coordinate multimedia content, such as live video features, infographics, digital cards, GIFs, photography in line with youth outreach strategy. • Help drive multilingualism, by making content available on new social media accounts in official UN languages. Make multimedia social media stories available to all field offices and UNICs. • Benchmark performance and key trends for youth engagement on social media. Refine the Office's youth outreach strategy, in view of best practices. Identify opportunities for public engagement through strategic communications products and processes. • Monitor social media engagement & new audience development. Adjust and optimize operations so as to improve results and refine outreach strategies to targeted audiences. • Provide technical support for the creation, and monitoring of Google and YouTube ads, to widely disseminate OHCHR's work globally, with an emphasis on campaigns. • Other communications tasks as defined by the head of the Digital Outreach Unit.

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are required to:- Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day)- Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country- Provide annual and end of assignment reports on UN Volunteer actions, results and opportunities using UNV’s Volunteer Reporting Application- Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.- Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers- Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

Results/Expected Outputs: • Create analytical reports on social media performance, for weekly or monthly reports, such as Google Adwords, and also new campaigns and partnerships, including data such as new audience development. • Produce video products, digital cards, GIFs, photography and other social media products. • Build a portfolio of educational partnerships, media partnerships and influencers for all assigned campaigns.

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for this assignment though any relevant academic and/or practical experience, in particular in the area of legal or human rights affairs, sustainable development and/or development cooperation would be an advantage.

Applicants should be computer literate in standard software applications; have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations with a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter and have the demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs - which includes willingness to understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Language Skills: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this assignment, fluency in English is required, knowledge of French is an asset. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable (i.e., Arabic, Chinese, Russian or Spanish).

Area of Expertise: Proven hands-on experience in marketing and social media, specifically, creating multimedia products.

The UN Volunteer will be based in Geneva, Switzerland. Currently, there are no direct threats to UN personnel or assets within the country. It is the incumbent’s responsibility to comply with immigration, customs and health requirements while entering/exiting the country. The incumbent is responsible for finding and securing their own accommodation. Geneva is a cosmopolitan metropolis with modern amenities, cultural attractions, public transportation restaurants, and nightlife.

UN Volunteer entitlements and allowances: The purpose of the allowances and entitlements paid to UN Volunteers is to enable UN Volunteers to sustain a secure standard of living at the duty stations in line with United Nations standards without incurring personal costs. The allowances are in no way to be understood as compensation, reward, or salary in exchange for the UN Volunteer’s service.
