The World Heritage Centre implements and monitors the 1972 Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage (World Heritage Convention) and the Recommendation concerning the Historic Urban Landscape (2011). Both instruments provide platforms for international cooperation to develop innovative strategies and build institutional and human capacities for the sustainable conservation, preservation and management of cultural and natural heritage in the face of increasing threats, such as the effects of climate change, pressure from uncontrolled urbanisation and development, unsustainable tourism practices, deliberate attacks on cultural heritage and armed conflict. To date, the Europe and North America Unit of the World Heritage Centre monitors the state of conservation of 47% of the properties inscribed on the World Heritage List. The Unit is also preparing to facilitate and coordinate the third cycle of the Periodic Reporting exercise in the region between 2022 and 2024. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES ---------------------------- **DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES** Under the overall authority of the Assistant Director-General for Culture (ADG/CLT), the general supervision of the Director of World Heritage (DIR/WH) and the direct supervision of the Head of the Europe and North America Unit, the incumbent shall exercise the functions of Associate Project Officer contributing to the implementation of the 1972 World Heritage Convention for cultural and natural World Heritage properties in Europe and North America region, as follows: - Support **technical assistance and capacity building projects** in cultural and natural heritage management and protection, supported by the World Heritage Fund and other UNESCO funding mechanisms such as the Heritage Emergency Fund, in Eastern and Southern Europe, and in particular the activities of the Action Plan of UNESCO’s Culture Sector in Ukraine overseen by the World Heritage Centre. - Assist in the implementation of the **Third cycle of the Periodic Reporting** in the Europe and North America region, including providing substantive and organizational tasks required for the development meetings with national focal points for the implementation of the Convention and site managers (invitations, agenda, minutes) and regular monitoring the completion of questionnaires. - Support the flagship activities organised in the framework of **‘The Next 50’** (50th anniversary of the Convention) and any other **outreach activities** under the Unit’s responsibility, such as UNESCO-Greece Melina Mercouri International Prize for the Safeguarding and Management of Cultural Landscapes. - Contribute to the preparation of written outputs in relation to the above tasks, e.g. official correspondence, briefings, states of conservation reports, speeches, press statements, etc. **COMPETENCIES (Core / Managerial)** ------------------------------------ Accountability (C) Communication (C) Innovation (C) Knowledge sharing and continuous improvement (C) Planning and organizing (C) Results focus (C) Teamwork (C) **REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS** --------------------------- ***Education:*** - Advanced University degree (Master’s or equivalent) in the field of culture, humanities (history, art history), social sciences (sociology, anthropology, geography) or applied sciences (architecture, landscape architecture, engineering, culture or nature conservation). - Advanced University degree (Master’s or equivalent) in political science (international relations or international law, political science) could be accepted if combined with sufficient and relevant professional experience as described below. ***Work experience:*** - A minimum of one (1) year of relevant professional experience in cultural or natural heritage protection, conservation or management, of which preferably acquired at the international level.
