Overview

You have:

  • Advanced higher degree (Master’s or equivalent) in area of Environmental Governance or equivalent.
  • A minimum of 3 years of professional work experience in programme management at the national and/or international level.
  • Experience with programme and project development, integrated planning and analysis, implementation, and management.
  • Excellent oral and written skills; excellent writing and reporting skills in English and Arabic.
  • Accuracy and professionalism in document production and editing.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners.
  • Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment.
  • Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various MS Office applications and email/internet.
  • Self-motivated; ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines.
  • Have affinity with or interest in the environment.

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations' leading authority on the environment, setting the global environmental agenda, promoting the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the UN system, and serving as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. This post is based at the UNEP Regional Office for West Asia (UNEP ROWA), located in Beirut.

UNEP ROWA’s environmental governance subprogramme supports countries in strengthening their environmental governance frameworks and institutional capacities, enhancing policy coherence, and promoting sustainable environmental management in line with regional and international commitments.

The subprogramme manages a portfolio of initiatives addressing a range of challenges, including national and regional environmental planning, sustainable management of natural resources, and the preparation of emerging initiatives. These interventions typically involve coordination across multiple stakeholders, including government agencies, civil society, and local communities, as well as engagement with regional networks and international partners.

The Assistant Programme Coordinator will support the UNEP Regional Office for West Asia in the implementation of, inter alia, the “Promotion of Integrated Biodiversity Conservation and Land Degradation Neutrality in Highly Degraded Landscapes of Iraq” project, and will contribute to the subprogramme’s work by supporting assisting in the coordination of ongoing initiatives, facilitating collaboration with national authorities and partners, tracking progress across activities and supporting reporting and knowledge management. Through these activities, the UN Volunteer will help ensure coherent and effective implementation of the subprogramme’s objectives while supporting UNEP’s mandate in the region.

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of the Programme Management Officer, Environmental Governance subprogramme, or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the Assistant Programme Coordinator will:

• Contribute to the overall facilitation and coordination of projects under the Environmental Governance subprogramme. • Assist in planning, monitoring, and tracking the progress of ongoing and upcoming initiatives, ensuring alignment with workplans, deadlines, and strategic objectives. • Support the monitoring and evaluation of projects by assisting in drafting progress reports including progress reports for the Global Environment Facility (GEF) funded projects. • Support the preparation, review, and formatting of project documentation, including concept notes, background materials, briefs, and internal and external reports. • Contribute to the organization and documentation of workshops, meetings, consultations, and webinars, including preparing agendas, background materials, presentations, and meeting reports. • Support the drafting of ToRs. • Assist in compiling, organizing, and summarizing information from project reports, regional assessments, and other relevant sources. • Assist in gathering and organizing lessons learned, good practices, and relevant documentation from ongoing or completed initiatives. • Assist in facilitating communication and coordination with national authorities, regional partners, and relevant stakeholders to support coherent and inclusive project implementation. • Maintain organized project files, shared drives, calendars, and contact lists to support efficient programme management. • Perform any other tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor.

  • Advanced higher degree (Master’s or equivalent) in area of Environmental Governance or equivalent, a first level university degree or equivalent in combination with relevant training and/or professional experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree;
  • A minimum of 3 years of professional work experience in programme management at the national and/or international level, as is experience working in the UN or other international development organization.
  • Experience with programme and project development, integrated planning and analysis, implementation, and management.
  • Excellent oral and written skills; excellent writing and reporting skills in English and Arabic.
  • Accuracy and professionalism in document production and editing.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners, including grassroots community members, religious and youth organizations, and authorities at different levels; familiarity with tools and approaches of communications for development.
  • Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel.
  • Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.) and email/internet; familiarity with database management; and office technology equipment.
  • Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines.

  • Have affinity with or interest in the environment.

As this is a national UN Volunteer assignment, the UN Volunteer will be responsible for arranging his/her own housing and other living essentials. This position is based in UN house, Beirut, Lebanon. National UN Volunteers are part of the malicious insurance plan. National UN Volunteers are expected to be culturally sensitive and adjust to the prevailing culture and traditions.
