Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the Office of Special Representative Secretary-General (OSRSG) of the United Nations Verification Mission in Colombia (UNVMC) in Bogota. The Assistant Political Affairs Officer (NO-A) will report to the Liaison Officer P4.

Responsibilities Within delegated authority, the Assistant Political Affairs Officer will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Receives and analyzes information contained in communications and publications from different sources, including the press; maintains up-to-date knowledge of events relating to political issues in a specified area or subject matter; ensuring a gender-sensitive approach.
  • Assists senior officers with preparing drafts, briefing notes, background papers and talking points.
  • Prepares summaries of articles from a wide variety of sources and drafts a variety of correspondence, and sections of reports.
  • Monitors political, socio-economic, and other politically relevant developments in an assigned area, including gender-related matters.
  • Serves as focal point for assigned thematic areas, including the Youth Peace and Security agenda.
  • Creates databases that track project progress and provides other information relevant to assigned area.
  • Supports the head of the Office of the SRSG on programmatic and budget issues.
  • Ensures that all UNVMC policies are applied and followed thoroughly across all processes, including adherence to UNVMC code of conduct and ethics, and integrates a gender-sensitive approach in all functions.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Education A first-level university degree in Political Science, Management or Development, or a related field is required.

Job - Specific Qualification Certificate in the areas of political analysis, peacebuilding, conflict resolution or peace issues is desirable.

Work Experience A minimum of two (2)years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security, development management, conflict resolution or related area is required.

Experience working for the United Nations or a similar international organization is desirable.

Experience making reports is desirable.

Experience working on issues related to the Peace Youth and Security agenda is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English and Spanish is required.

Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
