Eligibility criteria

Candidate age: between 18 and 29 throughout the entire duration of their assignment, except the assignments in Headquarters duty stations. Nationals of the country of assignment are not eligible. Applicants must be students of any academic program (BA/BSc, Masters, PhD) and keep this status during the whole duration of their assignment, or be recent graduates.

Description of task

Under the direct supervision of the Chief of the Human Rights Council Branch, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

  • Assists in the organization and provides substantive and technical support to the regular and special sessions of the Human Rights Council, as well as meetings of the Human Rights Council Advisory Committee (HRCAC), the Universal Periodic Review Working Group and Working Groups on Communications and Situations of the HRC Complaint procedure;
  • Provides direct assistance to the Secretary of the Human Rights Council and to the Secretaries of HRC subsidiary bodies supported by the Branch, including to the Secretariat of the UPR mechanism during three weeks of the 39th UPR Working Group session in November 2021 (25 October until 12 November 2021);
  • Contributes to drafting analytical summaries and notes on the debates and discussions of the HRC and the above-mentioned subsidiary bodies;
  • Assists in the drafting of correspondence, notes verbales or other relevant texts in respect of the work performed by the HRC and its subsidiary bodies;
  • Performs other duties as may be directed by the Chief of Branch.

Bachelor degree or equivalent

Education - Additional Comments:

To qualify for this assignment, applicants must, at the time of application, be enrolled in a graduate school programme (i.e. Master’s degree or equivalent degree, or higher) or in the final academic year of a first-level university degree programme (i.e. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent degree) in the area of law, political science, international relations, social sciences or related field, OR have graduated with a university as defined above AND, if selected, must commence take the assignment within one-year period from the date of graduation.

Required experience:

Experience remark:

  • Demonstrated interest and/or experience (up to 2 years) in the work of international human rights mechanisms.
  • Previous experience as a volunteer and/or experience of another culture, (i.e. studies, volunteer work, internship) would be highly regarded.
