You have:
- Candidates must be aged between 18 and 29 for the duration of the assignment.
- Candidates must be enrolled in a graduate school programme or final year of bachelor's degree, or have recently graduated.
- Minimum of 6 months of relevant experience is required.
- Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory.
- Fluency in spoken and written Spanish is mandatory.
- Motivated to contribute to peace and development and to serve others.
- Demonstrated interest or experience in legal or human rights affairs is required.
- Previous volunteer experience or experience in another culture is highly regarded.
Contract
This is a UNV International University contract. This kind of contract is known as International UN Volunteer. It is normally internationally recruited only. More about UNV International University contracts.
Eligibility criteria
Candidate age: between 18 and 29 throughout the entire duration of their assignment, except the assignments in Headquarters duty stations. Nationals of the country of assignment are not eligible. Applicants must be students of any academic program (BA/BSc, Masters, PhD) and keep this status during the whole duration of their assignment, or be recent graduates.
Description of task
Under the direct supervision of a Human Rights Officer, the International UN University Volunteer will:
- Conduct substantive research and analysis of human rights issues/events in the Americas;
- Collect, document and analyze open sources material and other type of information and/or evidence for the preparation of briefing notes, statements and other documents;
- Draft and contribute to drafting a variety of briefing notes, statements and reports;
- Contribute to reports, including research of related literature, international law and jurisprudence;
- Assist the Desk Officers (DOs) in maintaining contacts with concerned United Nations Country Teams (UNCTs) and relevant human rights offices, non-government organizations (NGOs) and national human rights institutions (NHRIs) as well as OHCHR field presences in the region;
- Take notes of meetings with different stakeholders, in particular civil society representatives;
- Assist in the organization of meetings and seminars; and
- Any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor.

Education - Additional Comments:
To qualify for this assignment, applicants must, at the time of application, be enrolled in a graduate school programme (i.e. Master’s degree or equivalent degree, or higher) or in the final academic year of a first- level university degree programme (i.e. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent degree) in the area of law, political science, international relations, social sciences or related field, OR have graduated with a university as defined above AND, if selected, must commence take the assignment within one-year period from the date of graduation.

- Demonstrated interest and/or experience (up to 2 years) in the area of legal or human rights affairs;
- Interest or knowledge on the human rights situation in the Americas region;
- Motivated to contribute towards peace and development and to serve others;
- Good interpersonal, networking and communication skills;
- Willingness to contribute and work as part of a team;
- Flexible and open to learning and new experiences;
- Respect for diversity and adaptability to other cultures, environments and living conditions;
- Previous experience as a volunteer and/or experience of another culture, (i.e. studies, volunteer work, internship) would be highly regarded;
- Computer skills (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, social media, and others).
Language skills: Fluency in spoken and written English AND Spanish is required.
