This is a UNV National Specialist contract. This kind of contract is known as National UN Volunteer. It is normally only for nationals. More about UNV National Specialist contracts.

Within the Division of Science, Information and Dissemination (SID), the Publishing, Editorial and Graphics (PEG) support teams contribute to the implementation of knowledge management for health system development regionally and within WHO. The Graphic Design and Layout (GRA) team is an essential part of this work, providing a core service function within the cycle of production of EMRO information products, especially support for governing bodies and other Regional Office publishing.

The UNV Technical Assistant (Graphic Design and Layout) is a specialist in graphic design and use of all associated tools. He/she works under the direct supervision of the Technical Officer (Graphic Design and Layout) under the overall guidance of the Manager (Publishing, Editorial and Graphics).

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of Technical Officer (Graphic Design and Layout (GRA)) or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the UNV Technical Assistant will:

• Design and provide layout of EMRO information products, including reports, technical and advocacy materials, posters and other promotional materials, and finalize for print and web in consultation with technical units to determine needs. • Provide layout of issues of the Eastern Mediterranean Health Journal (EMHJ) in collaboration and coordination with co-workers and the concerned unit. • Carry out additional design tasks as assigned by supervisor, such as banners, roll-up stands, flyers, brochures, invitation cards, promotional items for meetings and events – visual identities, logos, name tags, folders, notepads, etc. – and similar items or requests. • Provide technical specifications for information products that will be designed externally and for printing as and when needed. • Detect and solve technical problems that may arise during production. • Any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor.

• As an active WHO/EMRO/GRA team member, efficient, timely, responsive, client-friendly and high-quality support rendered to WHO and its beneficiaries in the accomplishment of her/his functions, including: o Producing original graphic design concepts to a high-quality, professional standard; o Adapting existing design templates for modification and reuse across multiple applications and purposes; o Regularly applying amends, corrections and modifications to proofs and design samples based on feedback from colleagues; and o Contributing to team meetings to monitor workflows and procedures.

using computer and software for graphic design and layout of technical publications and advocacy materials, in addition to: •Knowledge of design and layout principles, aesthetic and harmonious visual presentation, appropriate typographic choices and ability to apply WHO style. •Extensive knowledge of professional graphic design software packages, essentially Adobe Creative Suite/Adobe Creative Cloud for Apple Mac and Windows PC and the ability to use such software. •Good communication, organizational and interpersonal skills. •Ability to manage competing priorities and adhere to tight deadlines. •Previous experience working in a UN agency or multinational corporation is desirable. •Formal training in graphic design computer software packages is essential. •Degree or diploma in graphic design, typography, desktop publishing, fine art or other relevant field is desirable.

Living conditions in Cairo, Egypt are generally comfortable, with good access to air and road travel, water, electricity, medical and banking facilities. The city has a good telecommunications infrastructure with widespread access to mobile and WiFi services. Many accommodation options are available, including good housing, hotels and apartments, while food and shopping services are available in abundance. Cairo is a stable and secure place for the most part, although some areas are moderately unsafe. Residents are advised to excise caution and remain vigilant at all times, regardless of the security situation.

As this is a national UN Volunteer assignment, the UN Volunteer will be responsible for arranging his/her own housing and other living essentials.
