OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

The role of the Senior Management Office among other things is to use communications to increase awareness of health issues, and enhance visibility and engagement with WHO, among media, the Govt of Malawi, donors and other partners, and the general public; and to use communications as a tool for policy advocacy, behavior change, and building constituencies and partnerships around key public health challenges in Malawi.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

  1. Conduct media relations in consultation with Supervisor, External Relations Officer, the Health Promotion Officer and technical units as appropriate. This involves proactively identifying and pitching subjects/stories/impact case studies and developing communications products such as feature stories, press releases and social media posts about key public health issues and the Organization's work; 2.Assist with planning and staging news conferences, campaign and advocacy events; assist in the preparation of press releases, arranging interviews, briefings and official speeches and responding to requests in an accurate and timely manner; draft, coordinate clearance and support dissemination of communication and advocacy materials while ensuring the visibility of WHO;3. Identify and analyze in local presses and the Organization's information needs, current issues and emergent critics, major events as well as public opinions on issues health services; 4. Monitor WHO's exposure in traditional and social media and produce a weekly media monitoring report distributed to staff, including systematic monitoring of pick-up of stories WHO has pitched;5. Assist the development and promotion of standards to harmonize language and style uses as part of communication activities.6. Maintain and update a media list and profiles of key reporters; work with national and international media networks, facilitating the dissemination of information on health-related topics;7.Collaborate with other institutions and United Nations agencies to support and promote the development and implementation of joint communication.8. Serve as focal point for internal communications in the Country Office, including drafting stories and day-to-day coordination of internal social media; 9. Perform other tasks assigned by his / her supervisor.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Essential: Completion of secondary school with relevant training in journalism/mass media, corporate communications or advocacy. Desirable: University degree in communications, public relations or marketing.

Experience

Essential: 8years of relevant working experience in communication and advocacy, including media relations, preferably with a large international organization. Desirable: An experience with the UN or other international or multi-national organizations is desirable. Experience in campaigns and/or social media.

Skills

Strong skills in the areas of media relations, corporate communications and advocacy. Ability to manage multiple, concurrent tasks, perform under pressure and deliver high-quality products on deadline. Capacity to research and quickly assimilate large volumes of information, package and disseminate succinct products to meet audiences' needs. Ability to operate multimedia equipment (e.g. video and still cameras and audio recorders, iPhone, etc.) and proficiency in MS Office software (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) as well as web and social media platforms. Ability to create and nurture relationships with key stakeholders including the media. Attentive to detail and able to quickly learn new skills. Good organizational skills and ability to work unsupervised. Ability to work harmoniously as a member of a team, adapt to diverse educational and cultural backgrounds and maintain a high standard of personal conduct.

Use of Language Skills

Essential: Expert knowledge of English. Desirable: Beginners knowledge of French. Expert knowledge of Local languages.

REMUNERATION

WHO offers staff in the General Services category an attractive remuneration package, which for the above position includes an annual net base salary starting at MWK 14,060,000 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable) and 30 days of annual leave.
