Aquaculture Trainer (GCP/GAM/044/GCF)

Organizational Setting

FAO Gambia and partners are implementing the Climate Fishery Initiative for Livelihood Improvement in the Gambia (PROREFISH Gambia) project. The Project aims to address increased resilience and enhanced livelihoods, health, wellbeing, food and water security of the most vulnerable people, communities and regions. The project will scale up adaptation measures that have been proven in a number of countries in West Africa, and in similar contexts, with a particular focus on supporting the development of aquaculture production, aiming to increase overall fish availability and enhance the incomes of poor fisher folk and farmers, by promoting aquaculture production through different technologies, including oyster cultivation and rice-fish farming, among others.

Reporting Lines

The Trainer will be under the overall supervision of the FAO Representative in The Gambia, the Technical Supervision of the Lead Technical Officer (LTO) and the direct supervision of the National Project Coordinator. In close collaboration with the Ministry of Fisheries, Water Resources and National Assembly Matter, and Department of Fisheries, the incumbent will be responsible for transferring technical know-how on aquaculture to fisheries extension staff, medium-level technical officers and managers, among other stakeholders.

Technical Focus

The Trainer will focus the trainings on technical knowledge transfer to the participants and to ensure that they are adequately equipped with technical knowledge on new developments in aquaculture and aquaculture management.

Tasks and responsibilities

• Organize training on aquaculture for Government Officials and implementing partners. • Develop training materials for the participants. • Carry out an assessment of the participants and submit a report to FRGAM

The Trainings will focus on the following thematic areas:

Under the Governance Module:

• Introduction and trends of Aquaculture in Africa • Role of Aquaculture in improving Livelihoods • Role of aquaculture governance • Types of aquaculture governance • Keys guiding principles of good governance in aquaculture • Trends in aquaculture governance. • Role of gender on aquaculture in Africa • Impacts of Climate Change on Aquaculture, with particular reference to adaptation measures and coping strategies

Under the Technical Module:

• Key terminologies for the principles of aquaculture • Classification of farming systems: • Types, methods and systems of aquaculture • Factors influencing production and productivity: Water quality, Nutrients, feeds and management. • Site selection and pond construction (theory and practice), including: • Soil type and topography • Basic principles in pond construction, with reference to components of a fishpond and their specifications • Seed production ((Oreochromis niloticus) and African Catfish (Clarias spp)) and hatchery management (theory and practice), including: • Theoretical sequence in induced hatchery production of Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and African Catfish (Clarias anguillaris) • Farm Management particularly: • Pond preparation for stocking • Nutrition and feeds (theory and practice) feeding protocos, monitoring for fish growth and selection, productivity enhancement, • Aquatic Animal health and Biosecurity (hatchery and farm) especially for (Oreochromis niloticus) and African Catfish (Clarias spp) • Harvest and post-harvest practices.

Under the economic dimension:

• Definition of commercial aquaculture • Key terminologies in farm management: Importance of Statistics: Data collection and reporting • Records keeping, transport and commercialisation, business plan and cash flows.

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements

• Advanced university degree in Aquaculture, ecosystem-based approaches to aquaculture s, or a closely related field • At least 8 years of practical and professional working experience in the relevant field, including experience in capacity development particularly training and extension.. • Working knowledge of English and limited knowledge of French. For PSA.SBS working knowledge of English is sufficient.
