Organizational Setting

FAO's office for Yemen is responsible for developing, promoting, overseeing, and implementing agreed strategies for addressing countrywide food, agriculture, and rural development priorities under Yemen. It develops and maintains relations with the relevant Ministries at country level. This position is based in FAO Representation in Sanaa, Yemen. The main aim of the FAO country offices, which are headed by an FAO Representative, is to assist governments to develop policies, programmes, and projects to achieve food security and to reduce hunger and malnutrition, to help develop the agricultural, fisheries and forestry sectors and to use their environmental and natural resources in a sustainable manner.

Reporting Lines

Animal Health Analyst will be under the overall supervision the FAO Representative in Yemen, general supervision of Livestock Production Specialists, working closely with technical and operation teams in FAO Yemen.

Technical Focus

Assisting in Animal Health Specialists in planning and implementing animal health and other livestock activities in the respective.

Tasks and responsibilities:

  • Assist in developing animal health and production implementation plans and support in implementation of planned activities.
    • Assist in disease monitoring, surveillance and reporting and formulation of animal health prevention and control measures.
    • As per livestock intervention protocol, assist in ensuring restocking the process adheres to all stages spelt out in the Livestock Protocol (technical specification, evaluation of bids, selection, inspection of animals delivered by suppliers, quarantine, health certification, transportation to distribution sites, distribution, and post distribution monitoring).
    • Assist in preparation of criteria for selection of projects beneficiaries as well as benchmark indicators for end-projects monitoring.
    • Assist in quality control of inputs provided by suppliers, monitor the implementation of projects activities that fall within his/her areas of speciality ensuring timely identification of problems, if any, and institute solutions directly or by referral to other experts.
    • Assist in planning, organizing, and training sessions for targeted groups as required to ensure optimum use of projects inputs.
    • Document best practices, success stories and lessons learned based on beneficiaries’ feedback and own observations from the field.
    • Ensure timely implementation of planned activities as identified in projects’ work plans.
    • Contribute to preparation of reports (monthly, interim narrative and terminal donors’ reports).
    • Perform other assigned responsibilities and tasks as may be required.

Minimum Requirements

    • University degree in Veterinary Medicine or Animal Health training.
    • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in humanitarian and agricultural/rural development sectors including work experience with national and international NGO’s, UN agencies, governments, and donors.
    • Working knowledge (level C) in English Language.
    • National of Yemen

Technical/Functional Skills

  • Work experience in more than one location or area of work
  • Relevant experience working with government, NGOs and/or UN agencies

    • Extent and relevance of experience in livestock health and production.
