Role Summary

Alongside the Institute’s Advisory and Strategy and Partnerships divisions, the Policy and Politics division serves an important role for the Institute. The division generates analysis that shapes public debate, enhances the work of client governments, and supports partnerships which improve people’s lives.

The Science & Technology Policy team develops radical, actionable policy solutions to help governments foster R&D and innovation, accelerate technology adoption, and govern emerging technologies.

The postholder will be responsible for conducting research and analysis in science and technology policy. They will formulate clear policy recommendations and, under supervision, be responsible for forming and managing stakeholder relationships and representing the organisation externally across key policy areas.

This is a junior position suitable for new graduates from a relevant master’s program or those with 2 to 3 years of relevant work experience.

Key Responsibilities

• Research, analysis and policy development
  • Independently conduct research and analysis in one (or possibly more) priority areas of the Science & Technology Policy team, including innovation ecosystems, frontier AI policy, tech policy, or tech-geopolitics.
  • Package, communicate, and advance these policy recommendations for external audiences, accounting for specific political contexts
• Stakeholder management
  • Manage relationships with key partner organisations and use this external expertise to refine policy proposals
  • Work to build consensus across partner organisations in support of key policy proposals and to raise TBI’s profile
• Project management
  • Oversee day-to-day analyses, collaborations with analysts, etc.
  • Provide regular updates to leadership
  • Brief senior leaders on progress and timelines for delivery

A day of a TBI Policy Analyst is varied. Some of the things you can expect include:

• Desk research and analysis to write policy briefings, blogs, notes or longer reports
• Working with your colleagues in the Science & Technology Policy team on some 3-6-month projects to produce high-quality reports and recommendations
• Going for coffee with your contacts in the government and tech scene to understand the hot political and policy topics
• Participating in or hosting seminars on science and tech policy issues

Person Specification

We are looking for an enthusiastic and committed individual who:

• Has a master’s degree in a relevant field, or a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field plus 2-3 years of work experience in technology, policy or consulting
• Possesses a keen interest in technology, policy and current affairs
• Has excellent writing skills and can develop written policy products, such as briefings and reports, at speed and to a high standard
• Can independently conduct qualitative or quantitative policy research and analysis
• Has the ability to work flexibly and under pressure to adapt to changing approaches and situations ‘on the ground’
• Is interested and knowledgeable in the current policy and political debates in the countries where the Institute is working
• The role is based in London, and you must have an existing right to work in the UK

Desirable:

• Experience working on any of the following issues: artificial intelligence; science and innovation ecosystems; cybersecurity; internet and tech policy; or the governance of emerging technologies – either in a government, research or consulting setting.
• We are looking for people passionate about their interests, whether that’s R&D, tech policy, or AI, for example.
• We’re interested in ideas and a motivation to find answers to some of the world’s greatest challenges and opportunities.
