Contract
This is a UNV contract. More about UNV contracts.
Gender-Based Violence (GBV) remains widespread and underreported in Cameroon, with 1 in 3 women experiencing physical or sexual violence, yet thousands of cases go unreported due to stigma, fear, and limited awareness of services. In 2024 alone, over 6,600 GBV cases were recorded by the Ministry of Women’s Empowerment, while the health system documented more than 5,700 cases, including over 2,200 cases of rape and 3,500 cases of intimate partner violence. However, these figures represent only a fraction of actual incidents due to widespread underreporting. GBV is exacerbated by ongoing humanitarian crises, including conflict in the North-West, South-West, and Far North regions, where women and girls face heightened risks of violence, exploitation, and abuse. Millions of people are affected by these crises, with GBV consistently identified as a major protection concern. Despite the rapid growth of social media use, digital platforms remain underutilized for coordinated GBV prevention. At the same time, influencers who can shape public attitudes on a scale and Online UN Volunteers who can sustain engagement and amplify messages are not systematically mobilized. This highlights the urgent need for a digital, scalable approach that leverages both groups to increase awareness, challenge norms, and drive nationwide engagement against GBV. This initiative, led by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in collaboration with the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) program, aims to harness the power of Online UN Volunteers and Influencers to create a coordinated, high-impact digital campaign against GBV in Cameroon. It is part of the broader Safe Spaces, Strong Voices Against GBV Project, a comprehensive intervention designed to address Gender-Based Violence through prevention, protection, and empowerment strategies. The project focuses on creating both physical and digital safe spaces where individuals especially women and girls can speak out, access support services, and seek justice without fear of stigma or retaliation.
