Result of Service - The mission weapons and ammunition database are accurate and current. - The weapon and ammunition inspections are conducted according to the approved programs. - Risks associated with weapons and ammunition is mitigated. - Ammunition stockpile is maintained within the approved ceiling. - Quantity of unserviceable ammunition is kept to the minimum. - Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) are up-to-date and implemented. - Weapons and ammunition management knowledge of the deployed unit is adequate Ammunition and ASA inspection reports.

Expected duration Initial period of six (6 months), possibility of extension up to a maximum of 9 months subject to availability on funds and performance.

Duties and Responsibilities Under the supervision of Chief WAMU and SATO the incumbent will undertake the following tasks:

  • Plan and carry out periodic, operational, and arrival/repatriation inspections of ammunition and explosives of T/PCC units along with the Contingent-Owned Equipment (COE) Unit team or separately. Report on all mission ammunition/explosives and their storage condition in the Ammunition Inspection Report.
  • Conduct special inspections of unserviceable, expired, and segregated ammunition and explosives and recommend their disposal (in the mission area) to SATO.
  • As and when required, conduct Dangerous Goods (DG)-Ammunition/Explosives inspections, and provide a DG certificate prior to any bulk move of ammunition/explosives, particularly when moved by air.
  • Coordinate risk assessments in connection with ammunition and explosives.
  • Prepare/update all necessary Ammunition and Explosives Regulations and technical SOPs according to the United Nations ammunition/explosives safety criteria.
  • Develop and operate the ammunition storage licensing system in accordance with IATG Clause 2.30, “Licensing of Explosive Facilities”.
  • Assist the COE Team during Operational Readiness Inspections (ORI) and provide professional advice on ammunition and, to a limited extent, armaments.
  • Conduct Safe-to-Move inspections and process the associated certification.
  • Coordinates ASA rehabilitation efforts.
  • Provides advice on weapons, ammunition and ASA related safety and security issues.
  • Maintains up-to-date weapons and ammunition database.
  • Review inspection findings in the Uniformed Capabilities Management System (UCM).
  • Take part in investigation of any loss of weapons and/or ammunition.
  • Provide training to deployed units and individual staff officers on weapons and ammunition issues.
  • Draft briefing notes, point papers, minutes of meetings as directed.
  • Supports the work of the Weapons and Ammunition Advisory Board as directed.
  • Perform other duties as directed.

    Qualifications/special skills Qualified through an Ammunition Technical Officers’ (ATO) Course from a Defense/Military training institution is required.

Any other relevant qualification or certification will be considered additional quality and suitability for the position.

A minimum seven (7) years of military experience in conventional ammunition stockpile management is required.

Experience in working directly with projects and programs related to ammunition demilitarization, explosive ordnance destruction or logistic ammunition management is desirable.

Experience in database management is desirable.

Ammunition Inspector (Level 5) certification or equivalent in line with Annex M of IATG 01.90 (3rd edition) from any Defense/Military training institution is required.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, Fluency in oral and written English is required.

Additional Information The position requires frequent travels to the field locations in the mission area.
