Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the Aviation Section within the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS). The Air Operations Assistant will be based in Juba and will report directly to the Chief, Air Operations Unit. Juba is classified in the "E" category and as a non-family duty station.

Responsibilities Within delegated authority, the Air Operations Assistant will carry out the following duties:

Publish, coordinate and schedule air transportation in accordance with the Department of Field Support (DFS) Aviation Manual, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Local Area Procedures; •Provide inputs to the management about the efficient, economical and safe use of the UN air assets by bringing deficiencies to the attention of an officer.•Monitor technical and safety performance of aviation assets; •Correct flight safety deficiencies; •Monitor and evaluate compliance with the DFS Aviation Safety Programme. •Co-ordinate distribution of aviation safety publicity document to appropriate areas within the mission by ensuring timely production of documents.•Confirm all aircraft are airworthy in accordance with Annex 8 of the Chicago Convention and properly certified;•Assist in the development and implementation of Mission Aviation SOPs in compliance with current DFS Aviation Manual, Host Nation AIPs, Annex 6 of the Chicago Convention and the CAA regulations of air carrier country of registry by making recommendations to the Officer.•Perform inspections of aircraft and aircrews to ensure compliance with the provisions of aviation contracts for operational and administrative acceptance in accordance with the long term charter agreement/ contract or Letter of Assists (LOAs);•Produce aircraft performance, carrier assessment and contract completion reports;•Develop Air Tasking Order/flight schedules and monitor aircraft utilization and flight activities; •Liaise with relevant aviation authorities for the coordination of flight clearances; •Document flying hours incurred by Mission aircrafts and produce a monthly aircraft utilization report (AUR) to be sent to the Air Transport Services UNHQ; •Perform other duties as assigned.Work implies frequent interaction with the following:Staff of the work section, Transport, Travel and Aviation staffHQ Aviation Section.Port Authority personnel within and outside of the field mission areaUN Agencies Aviation SectionResults Expected: A well organized and efficient Air Operations Unit capable of carrying out the safe and efficient transportation to and from the field mission of both civilian and military personnel as well as equipment and goods. The planning, coordinating, adjusting and monitoring of all operational and safety activities simultaneously in an effective and timely manner. The provision of timely and well explained information on aviation safety requirements and related UN rules, regulations and safety procedures to field mission staff.

Education High School Diploma or equivalent is required.

Job - Specific Qualification Technical or vocational certificate in Air Transportation, Safety Management, Air Traffic Control or graduation from equivalent military establishment or military/air traffic control training is required.

Work Experience At least 8 years of progressively responsible experience in aviation including at least 4 years in an occupation directly related to air transport operations, air traffic control/air navigation services, airport terminal operations, or aviation electronic applications is required.

Experience in the use of ICAO standards and recommended practices is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required.
