How can you make a difference?

This internship will support the Digital Health & Information Systems (DHIS) Unit at UNICEF New York to carry out priority activities relating to the use of Artificial Intelligence and Global Health projects during the last quarter of 2023 and first quarter of 2024. The overall objectives of the internship are:

1. to support UNICEF’s efforts to use digital health and innovative data solutions to support maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health services in low- and middle-income countries.

2. to develop a better understanding of UNICEF’s Health programming work and to help countries design and implement evidence-based, equity-focused health systems, policies and programmes.

3. to gain exposure to how UNICEF operates across its global offices.

Main duties and responsibilities:

The intern will provide operational and technical assistance across a range of areas that will support UNICEF’s digital health and data innovation work including:

1. Support country mapping of artificial intelligence and innovative data tools and platforms used that can be leveraged for UNCEF Health Programmes, through desk review and participation in calls with external and internal stakeholders

2. Support the writing of a technical briefing note on how AI and innovative data solutions can be leveraged to strengthen access, quality and delivery of Primary Health Care, including community health and climate health.

3. Support the creation of a page on our internal Digital Health Community of Practice that provides resources and guidance on how to effectively leverage AI and innovative data solutions for Health Programmes

4. Support the writing of case studies on AI and Health from country offices that can be posted in the Global Health Newsletter, Yammer and other channels in UNICEF

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • Letter of verification from the college or university that the intern is currently enrolled in an undergraduate school and has completed at least two years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of an undergraduate degree (if the candidate is 18 years old, this replaces the two-year bachelor’s completion requirement); or, Graduate Degree Program (i.e., Master’s, PhD). It should also state the expected graduation date. Recent graduates are allowed until 2 years after degree completion.
  • Copy of their most recent official transcript showing excellent academic performance
  • Copy of Identification Card (ID)
  • One letter of signed recommendation on letterhead or from professional email address
  • Certification of Health insurance coverage valid for the whole internship duration

    Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in an academic graduate program relevant to global public health
  • Basic knowledge of maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health issues and of health programs in low and middle-income countries
  • Have a specific interest in and knowledge of digital health technologies, AI and innovative data solutions
  • Possess excellent English proficiency. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) or a local language is an asset
  • Have excellent oral and written communication skills.

Remarks:

UNICEF appointments are subject to medical clearance. Issuance of a visa by the host country of the duty station, which will be facilitated by UNICEF, is required for IP positions. Appointments may also be subject to inoculation (vaccination) requirements, including against SARS-CoV-2 (Covid). Government employees that are considered for employment with UNICEF are normally required to resign from their government before taking up an assignment with UNICEF. UNICEF reserves the right to withdraw an offer of appointment, without compensation, if a visa or medical clearance is not obtained, or necessary inoculation requirements are not met, within a reasonable period for any reason.
