Organizational Setting

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations that leads international efforts to defeat hunger. Established in 1945, FAO works in over 130 countries worldwide, partnering with governments and other stakeholders to address issues related to food security, agriculture, fisheries, and forestry. FAO's mission is to achieve food security for all and ensure that people have regular access to enough high-quality food to lead active, healthy lives. As a partner agency for the Global Environment Facility (GEF), FAO supports countries worldwide in addressing the complex challenges at the nexus between the agrifood systems and the environment, particularly aspects related to biodiversity, climate change, land degradation, chemicals, and international waters. The GEF provides grants in different funding cycles to countries to meet these challenges whilst contributing to key development goals, such as food security. The GEF approved the Government of India’s Green-Ag Project titled, “Green-Ag: Transforming Indian agriculture for global environmental benefits and the conservation of critical biodiversity and forest landscapes” under the GEF-6 funding cycle. The project is being implemented in five landscapes: i) Chambal Landscape (Madhya Pradesh), ii) Dampa landscape (Mizoram), iii) Similipal Landscape (Odisha), iv) Desert National Park Landscape (Rajasthan) and v) Corbett- Rajaji Landscape (Uttarakhand). Likewise, the project titled “Promotion of Sustainable Food Systems in India through Transforming Rice-Wheat Systems in Punjab, Haryana, Odisha and Chhattisgarh” was approved under the GEF-7 cycle. The project aims to promote sustainable, integrated landscapes and efficient food value and supply chains at scale in rice- and wheat-based food systems in India.
