Organizational Setting

The position is located at the FAO Representation in Georgia. The main aim of the FAO country offices, which are headed by the FAO Representative, is to assist governments to develop policies, programmes and projects to achieve food security and to reduce hunger and malnutrition, to help develop the agricultural, fisheries and forestry sectors, and to use their environmental and natural resources in a sustainable manner.

Reporting Lines

The Jr. Agronomy and extension specialist shall operate under the overall guidance and responsibility of the Programme Coordinator, Programme Specialist for Abkhazia ; technical supervision of the International Agronomist & Capacity Building Specialist, in collaboration and support to Sukhumi Project Office’s Farmer Field Schools team.

Technical Focus

The USAID funded FAO project “Promotion of Integrated Pest Management through the Farmer Field Schools (FFS) approach” will demonstrate along the production cycle upgraded technical practices in terms of improved pest management and crop diversification. The Jr Agronomy and extension specialist will technically be in charge and support a network of 18 Farmer Field Schools (approx. 300 farmers trained annually) in Abkhazia and guide a pool of local agronomists.

Tasks and responsibilities

• Provide general technical support in agronomy related to the management of the network of 22 demonstration plots in Abkhazia. • Provide technical guidance to the local teams in the implementation of demonstration plots for extension purposes, including GAPs, IPM • Support the team of national agronomists in introducing experimental diversification of orchards’ FFS cropping systems • Support the team of national agronomists in promoting substitutes for nitrogen fertilizer application, including use of livestock manure • Support the team in conveying in field technical guidance received remotely from the Moldavian National Agency for Rural Development. • Revise weekly work plans of agronomists to be in alignment with FAO standards in terms of integrated pest control and support the FFS team on specific problems with pests and diseases. • Organize and participate in the activities of extension and capacity development, including the implementation of Farmer Field Schools through supporting FFS Master Trainers and farmers

• Participate actively in Farmer Field Days where extension activities are being developed • Other duties as required.

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements

• University degree in Agriculture, Veterinary, Livestock Production, food safety or related disciplines • 5 years of relevant experience • Working knowledge of English and limited knowledge of one of the other FAO languages, preferably Russian.
