The Agriculture and Food team in the Latin America and Caribbean Region (SLCAG) working under the direction of the Latin America & Caribbean Sustainable Development Department (SLCDR), helps countries tackle their most complex development challenges, including in the areas of Climate Change, and resilient, inclusive, sustainable and efficient recovery from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. SLCAG’s work program covers seven LAC Country Management Units (CMUs), and is led by a Practice Manager (PM), and a team of agricultural economists and specialists based at HQ in Washington, DC and across six country offices. The Unit manages a large portfolio of operational and analytical tasks. SLCAG also works in a collaborative manner with other units on landscape management, irrigation, fisheries, land use, nutrition, rural risk/insurance and policies.

The focus of the SLCAG team’s work going forward is on the future of agri-food systems, green and resilient transitions, including inclusiveness, diversification of economies, jobs, agricultural competitiveness and linking farmers to markets, one health, leveraging the private sector, climate-smart agriculture, digital agriculture, financial innovation, resilience, post-COVID recovery, and fragility and conflict, regional and cross-sectoral collaboration.

Duties & Accountabilities:

The WBG is recruiting an Agriculture Analyst based in Panama City, Panama. The Agriculture Analyst will provide operational and technical support to the PM and the unit’s task teams to deliver the unit’s work program. The primary responsibilities of the Agriculture Analyst will be to monitor and report on the unit’s portfolio and performance, ensure quality of operational documents, and provide guidance to the PM and task teams on World Bank operational policies, procedures, and guidelines. The Agriculture Analyst will also provide direct support to the PM to prepare rapid analytics such as briefings and presentations in service of the unit’s work program. The Agriculture Analyst will be a highly-engaged member of the SLCAG team, working closely with the PM on the day-to-day management of the unit and demonstrating a strong drive for results, dedication, and commitment to teamwork. The Agriculture Analyst will report to the SLCAG PM.

The Agriculture Analyst’s responsibilities will include, but will not be limited to the following:

- Support regular monitoring of the unit’s lending, active portfolio, analytical, and knowledge products and ensure proactive follow-up, regular update of milestones and reporting of outliers, to ensure timely corporate compliance of portfolio-related issues; monitor the unit’s trust fund portfolio on a regular basis (including preparation of the monthly status report) and keep a close track of key milestones and deliverables;

- Provide operational support to TTLs on the preparation and implementation of projects; as required, participate as a member of Bank Implementation Support and Review missions and make contributions to Technical Papers, Aide Memoires and Management Letters, ISRs, etc.;

- Provide English- and Spanish-language quality assurance to task teams for operational documents e.g. ISRs, Aide Memoires, Management Letters, Project Appraisal Documents etc.;

- Work under guidance of the PM on strategic communication or guidance notes, briefing documents for GP staff/Management Team and/or external audiences; prepare other written materials, e.g. PowerPoint presentations, meeting minutes, correspondence, etc.; support organization of workshops, seminars and learning events, including development of contents as well as communication and logistical support;

- Provide ad hoc support to the overall unit work program, as assigned by the PM.

Selection Criteria

- A Master’s degree (MA/MS) in development studies, urban/rural agriculture, nutrition, economics, public policy, or other relevant discipline is desirable.

- Experience in the Latin America and Caribbean Region desirable.

- Experience working on Investment Project Financing, Program for Results, and/or Development Policy Financing.

- Superior level of resourcefulness; ability to work with autonomy, manage and deliver multiple projects/ tasks simultaneously and to meet deadlines under pressure.

- A proven record in timely delivery of high-quality outputs.

- Strong attention to detail and to maintaining high quality standards.

- Reliability, resourcefulness and flexibility.

- Excellent interpersonal, diplomatic and partnership skills required for building and maintaining collaborative relationships with internal and external partners and stakeholders.

- Proven track record in managing confidentiality. Strong personal ethics and sound judgement.
