Overview
Conduct research and policy analysis in agricultural economics
You have:
- Advanced university degree in Economics or Agricultural Economics.
- At least 5-7 years of experience in applied research and policy analysis in agriculture and/or environment and natural resource use.
- Demonstrated experience in drafting policy relevant reports in agriculture and trade policy and making public presentations.
- Working knowledge of English.
- Sri Lankan National or resident in the country with a regular work permit.
Organizational Setting
FAO implements the Country Programme for Sri Lanka under the overall responsibility of the FAO Representative for Sri Lanka & Maldives. FAO assists the Government of Sri Lanka to develop policies, programmes to deliver on SDG commitments notably on those related poverty, food security, equality and environment. The programs implement agri-food projects in close collaboration with International Organisations that promote sustainable development in the agricultural, fisheries and forestry sectors.
Reporting Lines
The National specialist, Agricultural Economist, reports to the Head of FAO Office in Sri Lanka and works under the technical guidance of AFAOR (Programme) in FAO Office in Sri Lanka.
Technical Focus
Agricultural Economics, Value Chains, Crop Insurance, Rural Finance, Policy Dialogue.
Tasks and responsibilities
Research, analysis and drafting
- Contribute to the identification of priority areas of work and appropriate research methodologies for undertaking policy relevant analyses on emerging issues affecting the performance of agriculture and food sector in Sri Lanka, including production, productivity, marketing, trade, prices, etc.
- Carry out research, draft analytical reports, and develop evidence-based recommendations to improve the performance of food and agricultural policies, including approaches to enhancing productivity and innovation, improving environmental performance and strengthening resilience.
- Analyse the role of national and international food and agricultural trade policies in achieving policy objectives on food security in Sri Lanka.
- Draft briefing material for FAOR, review analytical and policy documents and contribute to corporate priorities as required.
Representation and liaison
- Participate in and provide support to FAOR for policy dialogues with Government of Sri Lanka and other national and international stakeholders in agriculture and food sector.
- Present analysis at meetings, take an active part in the discussions and carry out subsequent revisions which often require follow-up bilateral discussions with government of Sri Lanka.
- Establish and maintain regular contacts with national and international experts, Sri Lankan government, other international organisations (e.g. WFP, IFAD, UNCTAD, WTO) and non-governmental organisations (e.g. farm and industry organisations, civil society associations), national institutes and academic & research organisations.
- Represent FAO at international, regional and national meetings as required.

Minimum Requirements
- Advanced university degree in Economics or Agricultural Economics.
- At least 5-7 years of experience in applied research and policy analysis in the area of agriculture and/or the environment and natural resource use, acquired in a national administration, an international organisation or research institute.
- Demonstrated experience in drafting policy relevant reports in the areas of agriculture and trade policy and making public presentations.
- Working knowledge of English.
- Sri Lankan National or resident in the country with a regular work permit.
