OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

The WHO Representive's Office, China aims to effectively build partnership within and beyond WHO such as with UN agencies, the Government of China, and other multilateral and bilateral health partners. Capacity to coordinate and upgrade the quantity and quality of the translation and interpretation services as well as the production and dissemination of official publications in English and Chinese will be strengthened.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

Under the general supervision of the Administrative Officer and the WHO Representative, the incumbent will perform the following functions:

1. Translates and interprets for WR and other staff, documents reports, correspondences and communications on various projects, whether verbally or in writing into Chinese, drafts translation from English into Chinese and vice versa for internal use, such as summaries of press articles on public health and other relates WHO activities;

2. Coordinates request for translation into Chinese received from WPRO and HQ; when required, identifies translators and initiates/finalizes contractual arrangements; monitors workflow and deadlines; arranges for necessary printing and dispatch of final documents in Chinese;

3. Develops, maintains and updates roster of Chinese translators; compiles and updates English and Chinese glossary of technical terms;

4. Collects information and prepares periodic and adhoc reports on programme and project activities, as assigned;

5. Organizes data and information, prepares and maintains records, documents and follow-up system for the monitoring of project/programme implementation; including maintaining/updating of Regional Information System (RIS).

6 Organizes and participates in regular meetings, as required, with relevant government offices and the WR and Administrative Officer and other WHO staff; takes notes at meetings as basis for minutes;

7. Assists in the preparation of reports, project documents and submissions to government by providing information, preparing background material for use in discussion with government and other organizations. Participates in briefing and debriefing of project personnel;

8. Travels with WR or teams for field visits or conferences in other places in China when required.

9. Performs other duties required by the office.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Essential: Completed secondary education with training in translation and/or interpretation and secretarial or administrative work. Desirable:

Experience

Essential: Minimum two years of translation experience in a multi-cultural environment or in other international organization. Desirable: Work experience in WHO or in another international organization.

Skills

Thorough knowledge of office procedures and ability to acquire knowledge of WHO procedures, rules and regulations; typing skills;

ability to accurately and rapidly translate documents from English into Chinese and vice versa;

ability to analyze and interpret source documentation and data;

ability to draft correspondence and prepare documentations and reports concisely and accurately;

skills in the use of computers and ability to adapt various software applications.

Ability to work harmoniously as of a member of a team, adapt to diverse educational and cultural backgrounds and maintain high standards of personal conduct.

REMUNERATION

WHO offers staff in the General Services category an attractive remuneration package, which for the above position includes an annual net base salary starting at CNY 246,270 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable) and 30 days of annual leave.
