Duties and Responsibilities The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system, and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

The UNEP Latin America and the Caribbean Office (LACO), located in Panama City, Panama, works closely with the 33 countries of the region, and its activities are integrated into the Medium-Term Strategy and the Programme of Work approved by the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA).

UNEP´s mission is to provide leadership and encourage partnership in caring for the environment by inspiring, informing, and enabling nations and peoples to improve their quality of life without compromising that of future generations.

In terms of supporting countries in the region to achieve global commitments under the Paris Agreement, the UNEP Climate Change Subprogramme for Latin America and the Caribbean aims to strengthen countries' capacity to move towards climate resilience and low-emissions strategies for sustainable development and human well-being. Within this framework, the UNEP Climate Change Subprogramme, through its Climate Change Unit, leads and supports various initiatives aimed at designing, promoting, and implementing innovative mitigation and adaptation solutions at the national and sub-national levels, and strengthening countries' transparency frameworks.

The expected achievement regarding climate change adaptation is that adaptation approaches, including ecosystem-based approaches, are implemented, and integrated into key national and sectoral development strategies to reduce vulnerability and strengthen resilience to the impacts of climate change. Similarly, the UNEP Climate Change Subprogramme also commits to ensuring that cross-cutting issues such as gender equity and women's empowerment are effectively integrated into the development of its tasks to ensure equitable development in line with its adaptation objectives.
