Duties and Responsibilities
Org. Setting and Reporting The President’s Office of the United Nations International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals ("Mechanism") invites applications for internships. The duration of the internship generally ranges from three months to six months. Please indicate your preferred internship period in your cover letter. The Mechanism is mandated to perform a number of essential functions previously carried out by the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia. In carrying out these essential functions the Mechanism maintains the legacies of these two pioneering ad hoc international criminal courts and strives to reflect best practices in the field of international criminal justice. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week. Responsibilities and Duties Under the supervision of Personal Assistant of the President and Legal Officers, the intern will: • Assist with the President’s and staff with mission preparation, such as travel, preparing talking points and researching background information about interlocutors; planning logistics for VIP and group visits; townhalls. • Prepare for Judges’ plenaries and hearings (sending invitations, preparing background documents, booking conference rooms, coordinating video-links, liaising with both branches of the Mechanism). • Broadly assisting with the preparation, planning and logistics of external lectures and events the President takes part in. Take notes, prepare minutes of meeting, assist with legal filings. • Perform research on legal cases using online and library resources for the President and the Chef de Cabinet and Principal Legal Advisor as well as other members of the President’s Office. • Gather background documents/information about legal cases for the President and members of her Office. • Research background information for the preparation of speeches of the President and presentations by the President’s members. • Assist with general administrative duties such as responding to telephone enquiries and redirecting calls to various sections of the Mechanism. • Acknowledge receipt of and attendance to invitations sent to the President and the Chef de Cabinet and Principal Legal Advisor. • Assisting any other President’s Office staff with administrative, legal tasks and correspondence. • Any other ad hoc duties assigned by the Chef de Cabinet and Principal Legal Advisor or any members of the staff of the President’s Office.
Qualifications/special skills
To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must, at the time of application, meet one of the following requirements: (a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or, (b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent). No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work, or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship. Previous experience in Administration is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the Mechanism. Fluency in oral and written English is required.

Please note internships are unpaid. Mechanism interns are responsible for all internship related expenses that they incur. Interns must therefore be able to cover their costs of travel, insurance, accommodation, as well as living expenses during the internship period. The United Nations accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during an internship. Therefore, upon award of an internship, interns are responsible for securing adequate insurance coverage and are required to sign and return a statement confirming their understanding and acceptance of these conditions of service. Each prospective intern must sign the Acceptance and Undertaking Form to indicate their understanding and acceptance of this stipulation. There should be no expectation of employment by the United Nations or the Mechanism upon completion of the internship. Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.
