The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the UN system and serves as an advocate for the global environment. UNEP’s mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. UNEP’s Communications Division communicates core messages to stakeholders and partners, raising environmental awareness and enhancing the organization’s profile worldwide.

The International Volunteer Account Manager will be working in the Publications Unit of the Communication Division. The International UN Volunteer will be assigned a portfolio consisting of UNEP key publications and will coordinate the production of communications assets and launch plans for the assigned publications, as well as serve as the client service representative of the Communications Division with the relevant publications teams from other divisions.

Under the direct supervision of the Managing Publisher, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

· Act as the Communication Division’s first point of contact for the Science Divi-sion and other divisions that seek to launch spotlight, institutional series and newsworthy technical publications as assigned by Supervisor. Develop a trusted advisor relationship for their communication requests and needs. · Support colleagues and Communication Division teams to respond to client re-quests and identify communication services and solutions according to identi-fied needs. · Develop communication plans for UNEP’s spotlight and institutional series publications, including coordination of production of assets and delivery to ap-propriate sections. · Support the timely and successful delivery of communication services, includ-ing monitoring of budgets for client portfolios. · Assist in communication of progress and key metrics of monthly/quarterly initi-atives to stakeholders within the Division and in the wider organization. · Identify and promote key events and other communication opportunities in the Science, digital transformation and corporate services programmes. Ensure Communication Division teams are alerted and respond appropriately. · Introduction of planning templates, tools and processes to improve stream-lined coordination of publication releases · Assist in preparation of periodic internal and donor reports as required. · Other tasks will be assigned as required.

  • Experience in communications and/or scientific publication launches; preferably in en-vironment or related topics
  • Experience in formulating and implementing communication plans, including manage-ment of timelines and budgets
  • Experience in project management and coordination across teams and organizations.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written, and strong networking skills.
  • Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment and build harmonious working relation-ships both inside and outside the organization.

The Republic of Kenya is an equatorial nation on the coast of East Africa, neighboring Somalia, Ethiopia, Sudan, Uganda, Tanzania, and the Indian Ocean. Kenya has two levels of Government; National Government and 47 sub-national Governments called Counties. Counties are further divided into sub-counties. Kenya is a multi-party state with Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches. Kenya’s population of more than 40 million is growing at an annual rate of 2.2%. The country’s GNP per capita estimated at purchasing power parity (PPP) is $975, and the GNP is growing at an average rate of 0.1%

annually. More than 26% of Kenya’s people live below the international poverty line of $1 per day. Kenya’s main food crops are “maize, wheat, pulses, roots and tubers.” (FAO).

Nairobi is a modern metropolitan city where most basic goods and services, health facilities, public transport, telecommunication and banking services and educational facilities are readily available. The city is widely connected through its main airport, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and the smaller Wilson Airport. Air transport is also available to many up-country destinations. The city is home to some 3,000 UN personnel mainly attributed to the fact that it serves as the headquarters for both the UN HABITAT and UNEP.

The socio-economic and cultural background of the immediate society the UNV would be living and working in is diverse and prevailing security conditions at the place of assignment is modest. The topographic and climatic features of the assignment location is highland cool and warm tropical climate.
